look at my son(s)!!
(have to restrain myself from playing tho because i still have a ton of comms to power through๐)
people often make compliments to my skill/style, but my anxiety is so strong and self-esteem is so low that when I get such messages/questions my first thought is "i don't understand if they're being sarcastic and mocking me or is it genuine" ๐ญ๐

i wrote an unnecessarily long thread for very obvious stuff, but if it helps/motivates you hearing this specifically from me.. why?lol i swear im just good at pretending to be ok at this. but i have my art teacher degree, ig
tl;dr - practice from photo refs and do it thoughtfully!!
10/11
I'm also lucky I chose a more realistic art style for myself bc it's way easier to learn/project from photo references/realistic anatomy books. But again, in order to stylize well you need to learn the realistic basics first. After that you can study similar styles to get a good grasp on yours
9/11
a bonus trick from my own experience and that of some artist friends - your anatomy can lack realism and proficiency if you make it look hot and passable, lol. most people won't notice your anatomical/proportional wrongs. but you still need to know the basics to "draw it wrong the right way"
8/11
Making frankenrefs(collaging parts from different refs into one) is also super valid! but most importantly if you draw over the ref - try to feel the flow of the body and muscles, use contrast refs that show that flow well. You'll start learning and applying it very quickly without refs as well
7/11
don't be scared/ashamed to paint over the refs to learn (as long as its not someone else's art ofc)! a lot of professional artists draw over photo/3d refs! it's also a lifesaving method if you're bad at visualizing/projecting from picture/your head onto canvas and feeling the volumes (meee)
6/11
you can find a ton of free resources to study from, but there are also some great photo ref creators with amazing packs (and free resources too). I have a very good experience (paid and free) with @/trueref, @/theposearchives, @/adorkastock, @/jookpubstock and satinezillah dot com
5/11
and most of it happened in the last ~4 years when i started drawing nonstop (fr, I draw p much 24/7). I also hate doing studies but I was able to trick myself with turning every study/ref drawing into OC art, lol. a lot of the stuff I draw/post is just an art study turned into OC art ๐
4/11
my anatomy is definitely not perfect tho and there will always be room for improvement with yet more practice. it's hard for a lot of people(me included) with perfectionism and a lot of pressure on themselves, but you will suck at it for some time. it took me 10+yrs to get to my current skill
3/11
books/guides for sculptors or by/for animators are often the best at teaching you volume and dynamics of the body compared to academic art books (imo).
tbh i SUCKED at drawing and anatomy in my uni days and only started progressing at it when I started using a ton of refs and drawing very often
2/11
--(even if for me it often includes looking at very traumatizing p0rn lmao). there are also some really good books that aren't just a shitload of text and drawings more fitting for medical students than artists. My personal fav that I use ALL the time is MORPHO series from Michel Lauricella
(totally forgot about strawpage existing oops)

;A; thank you! I have academic training that gave me the very basics and uh.. taught me how to learn stuff? but it's not necessary to get your anatomy together and consistent! boring answer, but a ton of practice from photo refs-
