AI Cannot Take My Job β€” C.E. Aaron Music Lessons The idea that my role in students' lives could be replaced by AI reflects a fundamentally flawed concept of what "learning" even is.

Am I kvetching on my website about AI again? Yes. Do I have any regrets? Nope.

Read my latest gripe at ceaaron.music/blog/ai-cann... :)

β€˜Opposing the inevitability of AI at universities is possible and necessary’ | Radboud University Since the widespread release of ChatGPT in December of 2022, AI has taken over much of the world by storm – including academia. Most of this happened with very little pushback, despite a myriad of iss...

β€˜Study after study shows that students want to develop these critical thinking skills, are not lazy, and large numbers of them would be in favor of banning ChatGPT and similar tools in universities’, says @olivia.science www.ru.nl/en/research/...

I went around to over three hundred people, hat in hand, saying, β€œHi, hello, do you still want to be my friend?” Is there a universe where this is not soul-wrenchingly embarrassing?

Also just generally lately have been thinking about words that have become pejoratives that didn’t start out that way; there’s probably a technical term for this in linguistics: like β€œvillain” (just meant β€œnon-landowning”), or β€œLuddite” (people protesting theft of their livelihoods) #justgirlythings

Have been thinking a lot this week about how, growing up, I definitely received the message that β€œhacker” was functionally synonymous with β€œthief,” β€œcriminal,” β€œgeneral ne’er-do-well”… when, literally, hacking is just messing with computer programs. why did nobody tell me this (I know exactly why)

i'm sorry, but there is no non-autistic explanation for the Voynich manuscript, a document from THE FOURTEEN HUNDREDS in which a still-anonymous person wrote a WHOLE BOOK in a WHOLE CONLANG that has STILL not been decoded

Anyway, got a bit sidetracked; POINT BEING: yes, introduce barriers for sports gambling. Blaming and shaming don't work. Giving people some distance between themselves and a harmful behavior, so that their better judgment can kick in and help them out, does.

The moral failing is systems that feed rewarding-yet-harmful goods to people and blame them for partaking in it, while profiting from their behavior - both social media and the tobacco industry come to mind. (I don't know enough about sports gambling to know if that facet of comparison works here.)

Too often in discussions about "addiction" it's assumed to be a lack of willpower preventing that person from getting better, and that's simply not the case. Brains want the things that feel good. That's not a moral failing! That's survival-related wiring!

27.10.2025 20:49 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

There's a term for this in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: "burning bridges." While "addiction" can be a loaded term, when there is a behavior that's doing a person harm, but is also providing the perception of reward to their brain, introducing barriers/friction to that behavior makes a difference.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm being too cautious regarding COVID - if my fears are as overblown as the mainstream has decided they are. And then I see graphs like this. Y'all, COVID is destroying people's bodies on a systemic, population-wide level. It's never too late to start wearing an N95 regularly.

The Pleasure of Effort For much of 2021 through 2025, I had taken a step back from having much public presence online. I recently went through and cleaned up the remaining traces of my former presence, with much wincing. I now step into a new online persona with much trembling. I am much more inclined, these days, to a quiet, low-stimulus life, which is not well-suited to a cyberspace currently built on monetizing urgency and attention. Unfortunately, though, the state of my bodymind - the result of long COVID and autistic burnout - makes working outside the home an unreliable prospect, which has led me to online teaching. Online teaching, alas, means online marketing. Simultaneously, I've been doing intensive therapeutic work in hopes of avoiding burning out again. This has led me to drill down into my values, then to practices like siphoning all the things my smartphone had done back onto a laptop (which can be turned off and walked away from), or moving as much of my digital life as possible into free open-source softwares (to diminish how much large companies can monetize my existence). In other words, I am working to turn my attention away from technology, while making a bid for people's attention through technology. A strange tension at best; blatant hypocrisy at worst. Easy as it is to lambast myself for this seeming contradiction, I resist self-flagellation by reminding myself what it is that I have to offer, and what I hope to achieve. * * * It is a discouraging affair to step into 2025's digital sphere with any creative offering in hand, only to be met with the slimy, rotting dregs of theft. This false "art" is not generative: it steals water from creation and leaves living things to perish. It is not intelligent: it cannot think, only spit back patterns devoid of the grain of human effort. It is artificial; I'll give it that. As I continue to develop systems for my teaching and marketing, most of the potential tools I examine have some generative AI component. I know abundantly well that part of what causes creators to rise in the algorithms is frequency of posting. So, I understand how and why a desperate creator might throw up their hands and let the computer make some posts for them, just to feed the Al Gore Rhythm's gaping maw. I can't do that, though, but not from some illusion of holiness. I am nothing if not a hedonist (here in my silent, sun-soaked apartment, cat snoozing next to me, daily breakfast of oatmeal and iced coffee in front of me). The plain fact is: I _like_ writing. I _like_ sitting for a moment, sifting through my mind, figuring out the most vivid way to describe some detail. I _like_ going back through a drafted piece, cleaning it up and tightening the flow. I _like_ reading the finished product knowing that I created it. Who am I to deny myself the profound pleasure of sweat and self-expression? I don't just feel this from writing. The pleasure of effort comes with learning or practicing any skill, from working out a new-to-me software program to identifying and resolving my student's vocal technique question in a lesson. I'm not saying that it is easy, but that it is joyful: generative in a much truer sense of the term. * * * Discouraging as it can feel to contemplate competition with churned-out digital gunk, I have to believe I am not alone in seeking deeply human things. So I persist in hurling a simulacrum of myself into the unfeeling online void. After all, that simulacrum may find people like me: people whose resistance to the current regime(s) looks, in part, like embracing new skills, rooting down into their personhood, and teaching the children in their life to do the same. If that is you, I'm so glad you're here. Let's sing (or play, or clap, or dance) a better world into being together. Blog RSS
