Our newest piece on BSW is now published. We show that when attitudes toward Wagenknecht come into the game, policies are no longer that meaningful in predicting behaviour. Personalisation in a personalised party! What a surprise! 😀

Once again, I ask what anyone has seen, at this point, to make them really believe that the 2026/28 elections are going to be free, fair, & competitive. Who is going to stop Trump from simply declaring the results of blue states invalid for "pro-terrorist conduct" or some other invented reason?

In this new article, we study voting for the BSW from a policy space perspective with @gles.bsky.social data.

Findings:
-BSW voters tend to be left-nationalist
-Depending on prior party support, either nationalist or economically left-wing positions predict switching to BSW

However, the causal mechanism behind this remains unclear and there is still a lot to unpack. As the BSW narrowly missed to enter the Bundestag in the recent German elections, it remains to be seen how the BSW and its electorate evolve (especially if Wagenknecht steps down as the face of the party).

Results:
▶️ Left-authoritarian attitudes and sympathy for Russia are positively associated with BSW-support.
▶️Dissatisfaction with the government (the previous traffic light coalition) and populist attitudes also drive support for the BSW. 👇

Especially the BSW's unique position in the German party system, combining left-wing socio-economic and right-wing socio-cultural positions, should appeal to voters. Based on wave 26 of the GLES-Panel, I contrast intended voting in Germany with actual voting at the European elections 2024.

Drawing on theories related to policy considerations and protest motivations in supporting new parties, I argue that left-authoritarian and Russia-friendly attitudes as well as political discontent and populist attitudes drive support for the BSW.

After the foundation of the new party Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht, it received widely attention and even secured third place in the eastern regional elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. This raises the question why voters support a new political party in an already crowded party system.
