In the classroom, a deaf student having access to signed language interpreting can give them independence. How? The deaf student does not 'depend' on the interpreter in the same way the non-deaf teacher does not 'depend' on the interpreter. .../2

.../2 I am not to be referred to as 'the deaf student's interpreter' but 'the school interpreter' (after all I interpret for deaf AND hearing alike). I love what I do and I make sure I do it giving respect to the deaf student.

I am an ASL/English interpreter in a mainstream high school. The name of the game is autonomy for the deaf student. I don't 'help' the deaf student; that's the teachers' job. Nor do 'take care of' the deaf student; that's her parent's job. .../2
