The games industry is also a volatile place, with some great experiences, and some awful. Non-games tech is far from perfect but employability and security is arguably higher. I would argue pivoting into games from CS is also easier, again, due to employer snobbery.

In the UK, non-games employers still don't appreciate how the technical skill and knowledge is largely comparable between CS and a games programming degree, so if you decide to look outside the games sector, the latter could be a disadvantage.

I always ask potential students, could they make games in their free time and/or as part of their open project coursework whilst on a traditional CS degree. If they have the drive, a CS course coupled with self directed learning in games dev leading to a portfolio is a strong outcome.

I work in a UK university, lecturing in games programmig, so this may not be true globally, but we send a lot of our graduates to studios like Sumo Digital and Team 17. They always tell us the portfolio is the priority over everything else.
