NRK reports that a Norwegian man charged with spying for Russia and Iran said he was motivated by America’s “one-sided support for Israel.” The man was detained in November in Oslo. He worked as a guard at the U.S. embassy. According to NRK, he now faces up to 15 years in prison.

In 2017, the ex-top manager of the Russian space agency was found dead in a prison cell. Authorities later said that the case was investigated as a murder.

Two times before, the media reported about “suicides” in the same pre-trial detention centre, known as Vodnik, where Kotov died last week. Once, in 2020, there was a "suicide attempt" - the prisoner survived.

Olga Romanova, from the prisoners’ rights organisation “Russia Behind Bars,” believes that Kotov’s case was intended to be the first criminal case for being “a member of an extremist LGBT organisation.”

Kotov’s defense stated that the prosecution had not provided evidence nor linked Kotov to the so-called “international LGBT movement,” a non-existent organization that Russia previously designated as extremist. Despite this, Kotov was immediately placed on the list of extremists and terrorists.

Andrei Kotov was detained in December at home. According to him, he was beaten during the arrest. The prosecution said the accusation was based on his statements and information retrieved from his phone. Kotov didn't plead guilty.

Last year, Russia recognized the non-existent ‘international LGBT movement’ as an extremist organization. This weekend, on the first anniversary of this designation, Moscow police conducted raids ‘against LGBT’ in nightclubs. According to reports, dozens of people were detained.

Gender studies researcher Kirill Polkov states that anti-LGBT rhetoric became a ‘starting point’ in justifying the ‘active Russian invasion of Ukraine,’ alongside the concepts of ‘denazification’ and ‘demilitarization’ of Ukraine.

Dmitry tried to terminate his contract with the Russian military after realizing he was gay in 2021, but he was threatened with prosecution and remained in the army.

— They were telling us that LGBT is unacceptable. There shouldn’t be people like them, and in general, there are no people like them in our society. Without much detail—as it’s considered obvious that a man has to be with a woman—the negative image of LGBT was reinforced constantly.

Two Russian deserters told Svenska Dagbladet that Russian servicemen had to attend mandatory meetings where, among other things, they were informed about the ‘threat of LGBT.’ The story is on the front page of SvD today.
