31.07.2025 18:55 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Learn the basics of aquatic vegetation ecology and identification in this 1-day workshop held on the campus of Michigan State University, instructed by Jeremy Hartsock, Erick Elgin (Michigan State University Extension), and Billy Keiper (Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy). Participants will learn to identify submerged and floating vegetation common to lakes throughout Michigan. Special emphasis will be placed on vegetation types relevant to lake management, including invasive species. Hands-on identification practice will be made possible through the use of freshly collected specimens. Pizza lunch will be provided, and you will receive a copy of Aquatic Plants of the Upper Midwest by Paul Skawinski.

You know that invasive plants are bad for our lakes. But do you know how to identify them? Do you know there's a Michigan program where you can learn to identify them, how to find them, and how to report them? It's the Exotic Aquatic Plant Watch! #MacrophyteMonday

Heading out on the water during the July 4th holiday week? Keep your phone handy! From June 28 - July 6, the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps), a statewide community science network that tracks what's happening beneath the surface of Michiganβs lakes and rivers, is hosting an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Detection Blitz. Ever heard of a detection blitz? Think of it as a community-wide treasure hunt, except you're spotting aquatic invasive species! It's easy to help - if you see an unfamiliar aquatic plant, a strange critter, or even something you have heard about (like zebra mussels or Eurasian watermilfoil), snap a quick photo using the free iNaturalist app. Your photos turn everyday nature observations into valuable scientific data, helping scientists and natural resource managers quickly identify and track potential threats in our waters. How to Participate: Download the free iNaturalist app and create an account. Join the "MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz" project in the app. Snap and upload your photos anytime during the event dates- no special ID skills needed! Let's see what we can discover together!
Sign up now to be part of our Michigan-wide Aquatic Invasive Species bioblitz! Help build the biggest-ever snapshot of invasions statewide to support research and management.

20.04.2025 18:43 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0An in progress illustration of a Black Swallower fish. This fish lives in the deep sea and is brown to black in color with a long, thin body. It has a pretty large eye and very large mouth that leads to a stomach that can extend to several times its regular size, sometimes even becoming partly transparent. This allows the fish to eat prey larger than itself. In this illustration, I added some colorful Easter eggs in its stomach to fit with the Sunday Fish Sketch theme.
Have been working on an illustration of Chiasmodon niger and decided to modify it a bit to fit today's #SundayFishSketch theme.

08.04.2025 18:08 β π 62 π 13 π¬ 2 π 1A full-colour proof of an interpretive panel about the fish and other animals that live in Manitoba's Assiniboine River titled Below the Surface. It divides the river up into the Littoral zone near shore, the pelagic zone in the middle and the benthic zone at the bottom. The the littoral zone are northern pike, yellow perch, and leopard frogs. The pelagic zone has walleye, channel catfish, phytoplankton, zooplankton and emerald shiners. There are burbot, mussels, tube worms and mayfly nymphs in the benthic zone. Rock bass and longnose dace live in the riffles near shore. The bottom of the panel talks about the reintroduction of lake sturgeon to the river.
A poster titled Bees and Beyond - Woodland Pollinators. It is a complex and colourful illustration of plants and their pollinators. On the left we have red columbine pollinated by a ruby-throated hummingbird. There are also purple harebells, wild strawberries and downy yellow violets. There is a yellow and black hover fly on the strawberries.
