Movements like de-centering men and going ‘boy sober’ tend to place the blame squarely on men’s shoulders, and with that we’re able to absolve ourselves of being active participants.

I'd become an observer of my own sex life, so I tried to unpick that in this essay.

After sleeping with a no headboard sort of man, I started to analyse why I did it. Was it for the anecdote? So I could share in heterosexual despair? Or something more sinister?

Heteropessimism won't save us After washing my hands in a sink striped with toothpaste and suspicious hairs, I instinctively surveyed myself in the mirror. Which is to say, I remained concerned with my image and this man’s percept...

When I told a man I was on a date with that I’m a journalist, he said “you mean you have a Substack?”

So I started one! On dating men like him!

And why, despite it all, going boy sober isn’t necessarily the answer.
