why would anyone who cares about safety object to a legal pathway for a ride hailing service 1/10 as dangerous as the status quo? Why would someone who cares about holding big tech to account fail to call for accountability for tesla for the illegal operation of their cars over the past decade?

Your original post says “tech companies are doing illegal things and daring us to stop them” and that we need to “make it illegal for robots to drive” Waymo hasn’t done anything illegal nor signaled an intent to break any laws.

Independent analyses of data from the millions of rides they’ve already performed finds waymos to be 1/5th as likely to be involved in a collision and less than 1/10th as likely to be involved in a collision injuring a pedestrian compared with human operated vehicles.

Waymo is planning to test their vehicles with drivers behind the wheel to improve their ability to operate safety before launching a fully autonomous service in minneapolis. they already operate such a service in several other cities.

People have been texting behind the wheel of teslas for years using a feature tesla calls “self driving” despite it not being licensed for such use. Waymo publishes indecent reports for every collision their vehicles are involved in (do uber/lyft do this? no.)

I’m worried Waymos are dangerous and also simultaneously worried they’re going to annoy me by going the speed limit.

2.8 million people voted in 2024 in nyc. ~2.2 million voted this year. But only 1 million people voted in the primary. to make nyc elections more democratic I would:
- nix the primary
- allow same day registration

Agreed - a lot of times the argument seems to be mostly about semantics. “Working class” is not a precisely defined term so it doesn’t make sense to fiercely argue about who it applies to without bothering to define it first.
