Just learned a great idiomatic Icelandic phrase. If everything is in chaos, going haywire, in disarray etc, you can say everything is on its hind legs (allt á afturfótunum). That made me laugh.

Winter is fun. Saw a few partially frozen waterfalls and, in Reykjavík, Tjörnin was frozen and people were ice skating. Will be back in November this year!

I was there once in September and the wind and rain were quite something. Also fun to see in November, when a lot of it is frozen:

Yeah. It doesn’t make much sense for either side to be comfortable with district court rulings. Ultimately, I expect SCOTUS to weigh in if Congress doesn’t amend the law to address this, which seems unlikely.

Yeah. For training they may feel more comfortable based on the recent Fair Use ruling for Anthropic, but that doesn’t get to infringing output, which they should clearly be liable for.

This is Cecilia Payne. She determined, as a doctoral student, that the sun was mostly H and He. Her advisor, Henry Russell, believed that the sun was obviously made from the same materials as the earth. He made her add a disclaimer to her thesis stating that she was almost certainly wrong. Later, when Russell realized she was right, he published his own paper. He credited her prior work but received scientific credit for the discovery himself for 40 years, until Payne was finally recognized.

Dr Cecilia Payne. Important to Physics but didn't receive recognition for many years because she was a woman.

From an outside perspective, I think it makes sense to protect the language, given how strongly it is tied to the history and culture of Iceland and how small the population is. #Iceland #Icelandic
