A nice touch at the ATP Masters in Toronto, after the winnerβs speech the champion awards medals to the ball persons.
And Ben Sheltonβs speech did go on a bit, but, hey, he won himself 1000 points and a #6 ranking.
And it wasnβt Brian Aldiss at the 2020 Nebulas long.

And even a contemporary Dolby 7.1 mix can improve upon the six track 70mm state of the art. And the new laser projection like HDR by Barco brings back a lot of the image quality from film. Itβs taken twenty years but a good theatre today has the best image ever. Better than a phone for damn sure

Filmgoers today are spoiled rotten by the sound quality. Was nice to see Top Gun in 70mm and pretend it was the same print I saw in 1986, but the blew me away sound of 1986 was blown out of the water by the Atmos on Top Gun: Maverick, so getting a DCP of Top Gun with the Atmos mix is OK too

Not Episode 4 and 5, not Godfather and Part 2, not Happy Gilmore or Superman or anything - no pairing of a movie and a sequel where I would say βif
this is Groundhog Day, Iβm good.β

If I am ever doing the Groundhog Day thing let it be reliving the day when I see Top Gun in 70mm and Top Gun: Maverick in Atmos @movingimagenyc.bsky.social
These are the best movie and a sequel pairing in the history of movies. Shoot me down with a MIG or F14 but one great the second better

Saiyaara is for sure going on my ten best list for 2025. It is big scale romantic fun with twists and songs and smoldering emotion. Perfect date movie. Bollywood meets Titanic or
Dr Zhivago so get yourself
to the multiplex.

The NY Times best 100 movies
of this century has more movies I actively hate than that I would regularly rewatch.
The reader poll has many of the same movies I hate but multiple additional movies like La La Land, Dune 1 and 2, Top Gun: Maverick and The Holdovers which I can watch repeatedly

Maybe Happy Ending
an actual science fiction musical playing on Broadway
won the Tony Award for Best Musical
And is the first new musical in many years that I would unreservedly recommend to anyone within hearing distance
Few better ways of spending two
hours.

The owner of the Chronicle also
owns the Emerald City Post which has outsize influence in the realmβs media capital. I am not sure how easily cowed the owner of this media empire is.
Wait until Oz finds out that the owner is an immigrant.

itβs weird to see the mighty and powerful Oz suing the owner of the Yellow Brick Road Chronicle, when the owner of the Chronicle also owns the powerful Ozβs most important TV channel. It suggests that the mighty and powerful Oz doesnβt feel mighty and powerful at the moment.

I quite enjoyed @silviamg.bsky.social THE BEWITCHING which comes out today. Full on MEXICAN GOTHIC vibes but also fresh, fun, multiple great POV across time and miles.
And Zac Topping is one of my personal finds. Great sf action writer, and GHOST CELL is out today.

review of Jerry Maguire (1996)
No joke, no irony - one of the best movies ever. Everyone in the movie is at or near βcareer bestβ level, and seeing it with an audience can confirm that it still plays well thirty years after it came...
Jerry Maguire
One of the best movies of all time.
I know, because I lived it.
And because I lived it, I know exactly the extent to which Cameron Crowe gets it right.
Itβs not the same kind of great as a Kubrick movie, but itβs great.

Saw with an audience today.
29 years old.
Still plays for keeps.
