Ken Jacobs (1933-2025)

A great artist, a wonderful teacher, & speaking personally, a close friend for over 50 years. Linking to a piece I wrote to mark his 80th birthday.

Journalism that fails to infuse a historically informed lens is akin to covering the smoke but never asking who lit the fire. History-centered journalism should be the framework within every newsroom.

If this monstrosity ever gets built, it's where their Nuremberg trials should be held before we put them in jail & tear it down.

If you live in New Yorkβ€”or you live in LA next week or you live in Chicago the week after that, etc.β€”I really can't recommend seeing PREDATORS @filmforumnyc.bsky.social more strongly. You will not see a more thought-provoking film about documentary ethics. And that's one of so many layers to this.

Also wouldn’t mind if the mayor of NYC actually liked NYC.

ICE just arrested Brad Lander, the NYC Comptroller and one of the leading candidates for Mayor, without grounds.

He was conducting routine immigration court work, escorting individuals from hearings.

He asked ICE for their warrant - well within his legal rights.

This is political intimidation.

Clearing rights for DAWN is uncommonly difficult. Unlikely that Criterion and others haven’t tried for it.

Not remarked upon enough that the political faction most critical of contemporary art β€” putatively on the grounds that it devalued traditional skills and craft β€” has taken the most readily to AI art.

It’s so funny when people try to make sense of his ramblings. β€œIt’s hard to figure out how he would implement such a plan” lol he’s an impulsive moron who doesn’t understand shit, it’s like ascribing complex motives to a dog eating another dog’s poop

The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. I reread it today; nothing in the law allows a president to defund PBS and NPR. In fact, Congress specifically sought to insulate public media from political pressure.

Jeffrey Katzenberg's 1991 memo (the inspiration behind JERRY MAGUIRE) about the state of Hollywood and the need to get back to the β€œsingles and doubles” philosophy that drove the launch of Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures is unfortunately more prescient than ever.

A fringe group of bigoted weirdos have dragged British media, government, and law into their hateful obsession with trans people. Grim, depressing, and dangerous. Everyone with power in the UK who's played along should be ashamed of themselves.

This feels like a major inflection point. If ICE can apparently unlawfully arrest & disappear a permanent resident and it is not immediately met with strong opposition from the public, officials, and courts, there is no going back.
