Most of our legal problem solving journeys take place before we get to court. To help courts run better, then, we need more help for people not just at court but also earlier, so people know their rights+options and act on them. Or that's what I told Monday's Westminster Legal Policy Forum, anyway.

Welfare benefits decision prompts firm to drop legal aid JR
Lawyers will be able to claim total costs at hourly rates when costs exceed three times the Β£208 fixed fee.
This issue has dragged on for years. In settling this, MoJ is taking an important step toward sustainability of the welfare benefits #LegalAid contracts. We were glad to contribute material in support. Well done to Will and Emma!

Boost for swifter justice as legal aid consultation launches
Vulnerable people at risk of unfair eviction or homelessness could benefit from a Β£20 million a year boost in legal aid as a consultation is launched today.

Did I just listen, on R4's flagship news prog, to a discussion of additions to porridge? One that sneered 'what kind of household' would have date syrup to hand? Er, ones w/Middle Eastern or north-African heritage, for example. And how hilariously exotic can a product be if you can buy it at Tesco?

At least 10%, nearer 30% in immigration. They could have helped more civil categories while at it. And the return to the 2011 position is only in nominal terms: since 1996, inflation has nearly halved fees' real terms value. Still, better than a poke in the eye etc., isn't it?

Review of Civil Legal Aid: Market Research Report
The report explores key issues in the civil legal aid market, such as demand and supply trends, recruitment and retention, and the financial viability of delivering civil legal aid for providers.
Still, questions remain about proposals' detail and why just these two categories (is helping people fight #discrimination less important?).
Increasing fees is a necessary but not sufficient part of making civil #LegalAid sustainable again, as MoJ's research shows www.gov.uk/government/p...
