It was mostly a simulation. There were a few ways you could interact with the person but you couldnโ€™t control them. Sometimes they decided to leave for a while and they were justโ€ฆ gone!

From a user POV Passkeys are the same. You can only use them if you have the DB they are stored in. You protect against loss by syncing that DB all over the place. If you lose all the copies somehow you have to do a reset/recovery everywhere.

With a password manager, your passwords are long and random. You canโ€™t memorize them, so if you lose your password DB you have to do a PW reset everywhere. You protect against that by keeping the DB synced all over the place.

A lot of the comments are from people who donโ€™t trust Passkeys because they donโ€™t understand the failure modes. Theyโ€™re essentially identical to the failure modes of password managers.

Day 5 - Advent of Code 2024

The big idea behind passkeys is that passwords are _fundamentally broken_ and that solution to the problem is not to layer on top of them, but to replace them. Offering โ€œpasskeysโ€ as a second factor confuses people and puts a false ceiling on the potential benefits.

In 2025 (less than 30 days away), PayPal will start selling your transaction history for targeted advertising.

I very highly recommend logging into your account and going to Settings > Data & Privacy > Personalized Shopping.

Save 15% on Caves of Qud on Steam Caves of Qud is a science fantasy roguelike epic steeped in retrofuturism, deep simulation, and swathes of sentient plants. Come inhabit an exotic world and chisel through layers of thousand-year-old ...

Seven years ago, I wrote my first feature for PC Gamer. A showcase of roguelikes that are reinventing the genre. One of those three was Caves of Qud.

It just left early access after many, MANY years in development. I loved it 7 years ago. I adore it now.

i have been imagining this world for years, and i want to make this game so people can go there and live many lives in it!

the game features whole-cloth, accessible design, deep mysteries, and a meticulous generated living world.
