Left you hanging, huh? Well then, let me offer you some...
...Clojure.
Yes, please!
My COVID hobby was learning to code starting with Python. I swiftly discovered how useful it was for sussing out the thornier bits of design.
These days I find another language a little more to my liking, but I highly recommend just taking a free introductory course in any language.
Rule 0 for every RPG I will ever write:
05.08.2025 13:57 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm not set up to record at the moment, but in case you missed it, here's me in April learning the He-Man theme.
05.08.2025 13:47 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0When I picked up the recorder last year, I was going to learn the Rockford Files theme song as a joke. A little surprise for a friend on a podcast.
That very much did happen.
Now I've got a soprano, an alto, a tenor, and a sopranino recorder, and noodle around with them all the time.
I think I'm learning a lesson about the importance of setting the right stakes.
When I picked up a guitar as a teenager, I was going to be a rock star. A shredding, metal demigod.
That very much didn't happen.
I don't even own a guitar anymore.
Folks, FOLKS! I kept trying and I am thrilled to announce it is, indeed, now fun!
05.08.2025 13:10 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I suspect it's not weird at all and this is just the Guardian looking for clicks.
05.08.2025 12:56 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I don't think she knows about second dinner, Pip.
And then, like, a gif of the hobbits from the Lord of the Rings. Not the Ralph Bakshi one, but that weird, knock-off Peter Jackson one from around a quarter century ago. The one the zoomers' parents went to on their third date.
I watched Howard's Mill last weekend and quite enjoyed it.

I am, of course, continuing to learn to play the recorder, aka the Devil's Femur. And one of the practice books I got from the library has given me the second best advice I have ever received:
04.08.2025 18:42 โ ๐ 62 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 7 ๐ 1I created a thread where I share the link to the zine I made on bgg for the new codenames.

04.08.2025 17:56 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0That's all an aside, though.
What I want to say is, working without all the correct information has led to some of my favorite memories of this hobby.
Like seeing a character sheet in a Dragon Magazine ad and trying to reverse engineer the entire game, because I had no way to get a hold of it.
I do bristle when I see it happen, though. Not because I need to be the boss of everyone's Dread games. But the warranty was voided on the sly. Now the game's reputation is on the hook for something that it expressly said not to do.
And usually, it's fine. But it's a doozy when it isn't.
But those are my thoughts. Not necessarily your thoughts.
Over the decades, I've seen Dread hosts call for pulls just to ratchet up the tension. Vibe-based pulls, if you will.
They are not how I host the game. They are, strictly speaking, breaking the rules. But they're not an unreasonable hack.
That first part, the fact that each pull is meaningful and does something in the fiction, is critical to my conception of the game.
That second part, I feel, is a reasonable and appropriate exception. It's a mini-game that uses the tower to work the tension in a different way.
Somewhere in the rules for Dread, I state that each pull from the tower has to be meaningful. It has to get you something.
Elsewhere in the rules, there's the exception that proves the rule: PC vs. PC conflict. Where you make a series of pulls that simply to one-up each other.
