If you'd like to try some fairly recent SF I recommend Anne Leckie's Ancillary trilogy. For something fairly recent that hovers on the SF/Fantasy boundary, there's N.K. Jemison's brilliant Broken Earth series. For older SF, I'd recommend Ursula K. Le Guin, Robert Silverberg, and Philip K. Dick.
