Praxis Seminar – Praxis

Giving a talk today in Lisbon on 'What is the point of methodology in political theory?'. Do come along if curious, or, more likely, if you need somewhere to shelter from the rain: cful.letras.ulisboa.pt/praxis/progr...

Here in Lisbon it's a public holiday in honour of the immaculate conception. Makes me wonder if any philosopher ever managed such a thing, let alone an immaculate concept? Rawls tried with JAF, but as his writing went from religion>philosophy>IR, even he had to admit it was more political in the end

Lugano's Plan β‚Ώ | Every City Needs a Plan B | Discover Europe's Crypto City Lugano’s Plan β‚Ώ makes it Europe’s top crypto city, integrating Bitcoin and Tether as legal tender with education and innovation at its core.

...but then apparently Lugano is the place you two should visit if that's your ideal holiday theme: planb.lugano.ch Would enjoy a video from there too!

Aha! This is excellent. Am watching the video from @excubs.bsky.social now! I think the only notable absence for me was Blockchain/crypto. Nothing about it anywhere unless I somehow missed it. A whole room praising the ECB and its powers of stabilisation but nothing on the new disruptors...

Sympathise with this, but maybe interesting to note one could take an entirely different line on the US women's team. They often (at least try to) represent an entirely different America. Can't see obvious equivalent in men's team of Megan Rapinoe. Also cant see men's team being half as successful.

Perhaps the best museum in Lisbon is TheMoneyMuseum, which happens 2 be free. Excellent account of the politics/history of coins/currencies, so maybe the only thing that would improve it would b a guided tour from dear old friend @stefeich.bsky.social + signing of press.princeton.edu/books/hardco...

Ah well now I'm even more tempted @irismurdoch.bsky.social. I have one child named after a character in a Tolkien book and one named after one in a Lewis book. Perhaps if I'd had a third she would have been called Iris. Just a guess of course, or perhaps an 'inkling'...

JRR Tolkien writing desk up for auction - BBC News The author used the desk during his tenure as Merton professor of English language and literature.

Now I know what I want for Christmas: This desk was used not just by Tolkien when writing LOTR, but also later belonged to Iris Murdoch: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Perhaps especially good if writing about Black or Green Knights (which they both did)

Your Party It’s time to build a new kind of political party - one that belongs to you.

I wonder how many (socialist-leaning) UK political philosophers will think about joining the UK's newest political party? Right now they're at the stage Macron's En Marche were at in 2017 in terms of gathering up a host of new candidates, so will be interesting 2 see the process... www.yourparty.uk

β€˜It’s wanting to know that makes us matter’: how Tom Stoppard made us all philosophers One of the most critically acclaimed playwrights of our age, Tom Stoppard, has died at 88. He assumed his audience was as well read and inquisitive as he was.

Tom Stoppard: playful philosophy in plays full of philosophy. Would be nice to go and see one or two of these with a few Bristol colleagues, e.g. @rebeccabuxton.bsky.social @wiglet1981.bsky.social theconversation.com/its-wanting-...

Australia social media ban: Teens challenge law before High Court They argue the law - which will block users under 16 from having social media accounts - is unconstitutional.

Philosophers love 2 stretch concepts but how far can they go without snapping? Consider e.g. lobbying, pornography & now social media for kids defended as free speech
(www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...) Reminds me of when China described America's TikTok 'security' clampdown as 'conceptual overreach'...

Is there a way of chasing evidence & accountability that doesn't just mean another (bloody) form to fill in? Forms quickly become admin roles, processes, & committees. They free institutions from responsibility & pile in on to individuals. Today's noble brainwave; tomorrow's hated bureaucracy.

Is the point of #worldphilosophyday 2 interpret something or change something? Seems 2 me we get 2 caught up with that distinction. If e.g. you interpret all history as class history & social struggle as class struggle then that 'interpretation' can quickly change how others try 2 'change' things...

I see this all around me in various families, from parents 2 kids. Contemporary employment & education often looks 2 pressured 4 the rewards on offer. Staying home & going online becomes a habit that's hard 2 break. Most diagnoses/cures I hear don't match how rapidly/recently this has happened
