Mayor of Greater Manchester
Given the weekend Iโve had it feels very much like a Dominic Calvert-Lewin hat-trick is now incoming.

I didnโt.
25.01.2026 20:38 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 4 ๐ 0PS - The fact that the media was informed of the NEC decision before I was tells you everything you need to know about the way the Labour Party is being run these days.
You would think that over 30 years of service would count for something but sadly not. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
Tomorrow I will return with full focus to my role as Mayor of Greater Manchester, defending everything we have built in our city-region over many years.
I decided to put myself forward to prevent the divisive politics of Reform damaging that. We are stronger together and letโs stay that way. ๐ช๐ป

I am disappointed by todayโs NEC decision and concerned about its potential impact on the important elections ahead of us.
To whoever becomes Labourโs candidate and to our members in Manchester and Tameside: you will have my full support in this fight and I will be there whenever you need me.

I have today written to the Chair of Labourโs National Executive Committee seeking permission to enter the selection process for a candidate for the forthcoming Gorton and Denton by-election.
Read my letter here.๐๐ป
Iโm actually saying something very different, Ian: that the Right put us in this position as a low-growth UK through deindustrialisation, privatisation, austerity and Brexit. We canโt ignore the markets and can reassure them through a more collaborative politics investing to reverse this damage.

"Voting reform is critical. It builds a longer-term, more collaborative culture." Andy Burnham
"When I was in Westminster, people didn't organise to get the best for their region. They spent all the time point-scoring."
At @instituteforgovernment.org.uk conference, @andyburnham.bsky.social called for a new voting system that would promote a "place-first, not party-first" culture.
We agree!
Andy Burnham spoke at the IFS with @uclpolicylab.bsky.social today where he championed devolution as the antidote to centralisation and privatisation, and argued a new politics was needed for a new economy to emerge, set in opposition to the new right who he said were architects of our malaise.

Quote from Andy Burnham in The New Statesman, September 2025: "โWhen we sold off the water, sold off the electricity, sold off the gas, sold off the council homes, sold off the buses, sold off the trains, we found ourselves in a position where ordinary people couldn't afford those basics anymore."

I left feeling inspired by Dr Agam Jung, who cared for Rob, and by the thought of creating a Rob Burrow Centre on our side of the Pennines.
Kevin - expect a call from me in the New Year!
Well done #leedshospitalscharity and the @mndassoc.bsky.social! ๐๐ป
Wonderful to visit the new Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds with Robโs family.
What a place and what a difference he and they will make for families coming after them.
Thanks to everyone who donated and, of course, to the great Kevin Sinfield. ๐๐ป
Quite a lot of rubbish in the papers today. Reminds me why I left Westminster in the first place!
