I *believe* it's the latter: all that gear is doing the same amount of work either way. Just de/encoding streams of bits, and encoding schemes are complex enough that all zero's isn't any less work than anything else. But that's just my very lightly educated guess!

@tracketpacer.bsky.social alright PHY lady, maybe you know this. do so-called "layer 1" fiber systems (WDM, amplifiers, etc) do any more work during "high usage" vs low? or is it more like "even if it's all 0's, there's always a signal that has to be processed in each direction"?

I think I agree with this. I also think that the former is always the lesser of two evils. The only way you can improve a system is from the inside. The people working to burn the house to the ground is stupid and irredeemable will never improve it. A squatter living in the house improperly might

it's almost like society used to agree that ignorance with a thin veneer of petty nationalism was both easy enough to spot and dangerous enough to entertain that we should warn children about it.

I don't know where it started, but the *lings style of language learning is great fun. I know rust and zig have them (rustlings and ziglings), I assume others as well. It's a repo with testing built-in so as you work through exercises it runs the tests and moves you onto the next one. real easy.
