this isn't quite that, but Slavenka Drakulic's They Would Never Hurt a Fly is a sort of Yugoslav War retrospective that talks about how all these dudes tried to make post-hoc sense of themselves from The Hague. She's very good generally

Ha, never saw one installed! I can’t imagine its crane construction, maybe the component pieces are connected on-site?

Seen these a lot in cheap β€œhistoric hotel” retrofits in the balkans: a way to get a modern bathroom in an old bedroom. Its kinda goofy, and i’m not a preservationist, but i dig it

Whatever the merits of Foundry Park, it's interesting that they're promoting it with this pen-and-ink style that feels very retro and much more approachable than the usual glossy renders (via: chicagoyimby.com/2025/12/foun...)

I try not to post much, trying to ween off social media, but "typographic revival after lead type was melted down for the war effort" absolutely rules as a concept

Salom still publishes a bit in Ladino, it's pretty interesting looking if you're used to Spanish: www.salom.com.tr/haberler/17/.... There's still a bit out there, but yes, the sun is absolutely setting

When I worked at a journalism startup, we had a very nice machine that was a lot of fun to mess around with. Made awful coffee, we managed to break it every couple of weeks.

Pink married Charles Townshend, who seems like one of the worst dudes of the WW1-era British Army. Which is saying someting.

I think it's the last episode of Deadwood Season 1 where there's a short scene where a deranged soldier mutters about all the violence he's seen/perpetuated as his officer gives a glorious speech. Can't find it online, but it left an impact on school-aged me for sure

couple things that come to mind are:
-How these conflicts overlapped in lifetimes: you have someone like Wellington, who fought in French Revolutionary wars, Indian wars, then Napoleonic...all within ~20 years
-Babel's Red Cavalry is a bit later, but is a stark, readable, text on violence

There’s a handful of converted synagogues within a half mile. And that big orphanage someone turned into the most haunted single family home imaginable. Hopefully it’ll be smooth

I remember @mattdpearce.com covering the 2020 primary, polling folks online, and struggling to square the circle of "most folks are passionate about climate change, Inslee is passionate about climate change, why isn't he the shoo-in candidate?" Still think that was interesting!

I think Zohran’s going to have to deal with the anger a lot of people felt at having to sit and learn during Obama’s ascendance
