if I ran a public transit system, we'd have a guy handing out umbrellas / picking up umbrellas at every station

Table, Donkey, and Stick might be a bit too small but is wonderful. That whole strip of Armitage is good depending on how far folks can venture from the blue line

Pink married Charles Townshend, who seems like one of the worst dudes of the WW1-era British Army. Which is saying someting.

The one that always gets to me, is that the "blue" in Renoir's 1881 "Pink and Blue" was murdered in Auschwitz

I think it's the last episode of Deadwood Season 1 where there's a short scene where a deranged soldier mutters about all the violence he's seen/perpetuated as his officer gives a glorious speech. Can't find it online, but it left an impact on school-aged me for sure

couple things that come to mind are:
-How these conflicts overlapped in lifetimes: you have someone like Wellington, who fought in French Revolutionary wars, Indian wars, then Napoleonic...all within ~20 years
-Babel's Red Cavalry is a bit later, but is a stark, readable, text on violence

There’s a handful of converted synagogues within a half mile. And that big orphanage someone turned into the most haunted single family home imaginable. Hopefully it’ll be smooth

Thanks for this one! Used to walk by it all the time, mused about putting housing there. Glad someone’s doing it

I remember @mattdpearce.com covering the 2020 primary, polling folks online, and struggling to square the circle of "most folks are passionate about climate change, Inslee is passionate about climate change, why isn't he the shoo-in candidate?" Still think that was interesting!

My sister lived in the international dorm when she did grad school in NYC. Got invited over for dinner a bunch, everyone else was also excited about being in new york. Had a great time.

I think Zohran’s going to have to deal with the anger a lot of people felt at having to sit and learn during Obama’s ascendance

The whole thing feels very β€œcollege protest” adjacent, in that it’s a lot of projection about their daughters and politics is downhill from there

Come for the unsettling antisemetic comment, stay for the hilarious attempt to deny ownership of an insta account where the avatar is your home address and a bunch of norse runes

I realize everyone views the world through the wreckage of when they were 24, but thinking about the project I wanted to build with my family - and what's taken its place - gives me the greatest heartsickness

I'm more angry at this than I have words for. It's worth reading Lior Sternfeld about Jewish life in Pahlavi Iran.

16 ways to defend a walled city, if you want peter ustinov defending constantinople; an awful mess on the via merulana if you want to hang out with a bonkers cast of italians failing to solve a murder
