UPDATED: Emergency officials are scrambling to find space to house hundreds of Western Alaska residents forced from their homes in remote villages by an unprecedented coastal storm that’s displaced more than 1,400 people.

The beauty and grace of birds never fails to astound me. We are thankful for the ability to live in a world with them.

Every once in a while you get to truly feel history. Usually a Park Ranger is involved. But a precious few times in a lifetime we are so fortunate as to stand in the footsteps of a culture-bearer who reached across time to touch our soul thousands of years ago.

This juvenile red-necked phalarope seemed a bit grumpy, but we are told was just concentrating on being wildly sexy.

Funny but almost true. Black bears haven't crossed from the mainland. Brown bears crossed when there were glaciers filling Icy Strait and Chatham thousands of years ago. In most places where black and brown bears both inhabit an area, they can coexist if there's enough food.

The BOB loved hosting the Introduction to Sailing day sails this weekend. We raised $1000 for Sitka Maritime Heritage Society and had a ton of fun doing it. Thank you to everyone the helped make it happen.

Got to teach these wonderful Sitkans sailing on a sunny day with a nice westerly today. So fun!
