At the Pratt Street Beach pier on the north side of Chicago, a man bundled up for winter holds a shopping bag and tosses food for birds onto a beach covered in snow. A half-dozen white seagulls float in the air near him awaiting his next toss. Waves from Lake Michigan crash into the ice shelf. The sun is setting on the horizon. The lake is full of ice, but there is room for plenty more at the bottom.
