Oh, for sure. I've seen a lot of commentary over the years that boils down to, "what we actually want is for EVERYONE to get the kind of policing that rich white assholes get."

I don't know whether the story I heard about Bangladesh is accurate, but the central point it's making, that people don't believe censored newspapers, is absolutely true.

I thought about this a LOT when I worked for a big corporation that had experienced a buyout. (This was decades ago.) Because no one believed anything the company said about layoffs; they believed rumors. The expectation was that the company would lie to us.

And critically, no one believed what the newspapers said, because they were controlled by the government. They believed rumors, instead, because those weren't under government control.

There wasn't an actual food shortage; however, a rumor started that there was about to be a shortage, so people started hoarding to make sure they had enough, creating a shortage. The government ordered people to stop hoarding, fueling fears (and thus more hoarding).

I read years ago (I can't remember where so this may be "parable" rather than "history") that the Bangladesh famine of the 1970s was caused in large part by newspaper censorship.
