I've been getting back into the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series after many years, and the most relatable part is how everyday objects like doors and elevators have been imbued with artificial intelligence and it just makes them obnoxious and frustrating to use and everyone hates it.

Not entirely sure if this is accurate.

Nice article thanks. Is it not the case that the kind of revenue needed to make LLMs a commercial success require a massive restructuring of the jobs market which in itself is likely to cause a recession?

An illustration in the style of the bayeux tapestry showing people enjoying a British night out. Instead of knights there are hoards of drunk revellers, a woman tumbles out of a taxi, a man wears a traffic cone on his head, kebabs are ordered and drugs are dealt behind police on horseback. There is fighting and vomiting also. The borders are embroidered with details such as a seagull eating some chips and a used condom. There are latin phrases such as 'Im tam ebrus est' and 'Allium Condimentum'

France can keep it. We have our own now.

Whatever you think of Tommy Robinson, it shouldn't be right that the police have the power to stop someone and demand their phone PIN. In the same situation no way would I be handing mine over.

Cartoon strip by me who is Stephen Collins. The imagery of the comic starts off with a single electron and then each panel zooms out one step - first to the microchip, then the OLED screen, then the iPhone, the person holding the iPhone, and onwards

Script:

An electron, forged in the first fire of the Big Bang

Courses through a deeply intricate maze of transistors and diodes

mined with unfathomable ingenuity from our planet’s deep geological past

and assembled from all over the world

Into a device perfected through centuries of technological evolution

to perform a beautifully synchronised pixel dance on an OLED screen

in an intricate moving pattern of shifting light

[Show a phone screen with an Instagram post featuring Ryan Gosling and bearing the legend:]

WATCH RYAN GOSLING EAT A PASTY FOR THE FIRST TIME!

whose choreography is powered by an global information network of unknowable complexity

which is specifically tailored to the interests of the being observing the screen

who is a member of the most advanced species on Earth

[Show a shlubby looking GUY idly looking at the Ryan Gosling/sausage roll Instagram reel on his phone while sitting in his pants and a stained t-shirt and eating a massive bag of crisps]

with a brain perhaps more capable of reconfiguring these signals into conscious thought than any other for billions of miles around

[Guy has a thought]:
β€œMmm…"

in this endless, silent void.

[Pull back to show the Earth as a tiny blue dot among the stars with a thought bubble coming from it]

"… I want a pasty.”

[ends]

Some studies show a higher rate of autism in children whose mother used paracetamol when pregnant, some don't. That seems to be what we know at the moment. We can't say prenatal paracetamol use causes autism, we can't say it doesn't. Should we do more research - definitely

I hate the snobbery implicit in this viewpoint. There's nothing wrong in the principle of asking people what they think. Having an opinion shouldn't be the preserve of think tanks or professional commentators. That said when journalists are out asking questions most people are out at work.

The bond market is in trouble across the world.

Long-term government bond yields are rising everywhere from the U.S. to Japan to France to the UK.

Finance is entering a new, more dangerous era.

Bluesky is shrinking rather than growing. It has no source of revenue. If it doesn’t grow, *it will die*.

Constantly making it unwelcoming, saying who you don’t want here, setting rules for what other sites people should and shouldn’t use, and the like, will kill it quicker.

The paradox is - Extinction Rebellion understood they needed to do more than walk around to get coverage - but what they did alienated many of their would be supporters. The threat of violence in right wing protests seems to engender greater support. How do quiet people make themselves heard I dunno

The China protestors have their walk, nothing happens then they go home. The hotel protests there's a really high chance something gets set on fire. So we cover the hotel protests. Then it's a Sunday and nothing else has happened and we've got all this content from the hotel protests so it gets used
