yeah. if you can ask an AI everything, why would you ask another human being? why would you make connections

curious as to your experience as well - especially with all the other trump-related pressures on US universities? is there any link there?

all this is to say that the pressure has mainly been cultural and top-down effort, part of university branding, rather than being a mandate or expectation. there is definitely push back, but there’s been no need for any open warfare as yet

the pressure to integrate AI is mostly felt in teaching i think. there is some suggestion that it can be used to automate marking and administration work. i have strong doubts - and i know some australian unis that have been recently sued for using AI to detect AI-written assessments

i mostly get suggestions to use AI from other young PhDs. though i can’t help but be offenced by these suggestions, lol. i chose to do a phd, why would i want to automate any of this experience?

but largely i think it depends on the supervisor - my supervisors are very much in favour of hands-on research work and immersion in literature/data, so im lucky to find no pressure to use AI from them

about a year ago, central office had these posters plastered everywhere about how “AI can be your collaborator, your ideas man, your research assistant”. which we of course found hilarious, as many of us barely subsist on the income from RA work. they were torn down in many departments

i understand that AI is big but i will always object to this argument that everyone needs to get on board with it. let the AI people AI but leave me alone to think and write manually in my brain and with real people
