Trump Seeks to Cut Basic Scientific Research by Roughly One-Third, Report Shows

"By most metrics, 2025 has been the worst year for the American scientific enterprise in modern history". The result - we are "essentially ending Americaโ€™s longstanding role as the world leader in science and innovation,โ€ www.nytimes.com/2025/07/10/s...

Pope Leo hits out at critics of global warming In his first major statement on climate change, the pontiff criticises those who minimise climate change.

"God will ask us if we have cultivated and cared for the world that he created for the benefit of all and for future generations, and if we have taken care of our brothers and sisters - what will be our answer, my dear friends?"

The main reason climate policy has failed is that it's opposed by an international coalition of fossil fuel incumbents, authoritarian governments, & oligarch-owned media.

That's it. It's the people who killed it who are responsible for killing it! Not the people who supported it! FFS.

California made history in 2025. ๐ŸŒžโšก Solar is now the stateโ€™s #1 electricity source, overtaking gas (83.1 vs 81.6 TWh). In under a decade, solar surged from marginal to dominant. Big kudos to Californiaโ€”proof the clean energy future is not capacity, itโ€™s generation. More to come! #EnergyTransition

Mr. Wright falsely claimed that critics of an Energy Department report โ€” written by five researchers who reject the established scientific consensus that the burning of oil, gas and coal is dangerously heating the planet โ€” did not dispute any of the reportโ€™s data or facts.

โ€œThey just didnโ€™t like that the conclusion of our report was, climate change is a real physical phenomenon thatโ€™s unfolding, itโ€™s just not the crisis itโ€™s often sold to be.โ€

In fact, 85 scientists submitted a sweeping critique of the report detailing a litany of inaccuracies, including claims that sea level rise is not accelerating; that more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will help plants grow; and that computer models exaggerate future temperature increases. The American Meteorological Society, a leading science organization, also outlined what it called โ€œfoundational flawsโ€ in the report. And the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the nationโ€™s leading scientific advisory body, also contradicted the Energy Department report, saying the evidence that greenhouse gases threaten human health has only grown over time.

President Donald Trump correctly pointed out during his eulogy for Kirk on Sunday in Phoenix that โ€œno side in American politics has a monopoly on disturbed or misguided people.โ€ He also criticized the absurd view that became fashionable among some liberal academics during the late 2010s that certain forms of speech can be considered violent because they cause stress. โ€œIf speech is violence, then some are bound to conclude that violence is justified to stop speech,โ€ Trump said. โ€œAnd weโ€™re not going to let that be justified.โ€

This is Washpost Opinion's takeaway from Trump's speech at the Charlie Kirk funeral.

No mention of him saying, "I hate my opponent." No mention of Trump's role in fomenting the January 6 riot.

Just unbelievable how bad that editorial board has become.

Its worth noting that when the first modern climate models were published in 1970 it was hardly clear that there was a warming trend; if anything there had been flat or slightly cooling global temperatures for the past three decades:

In a UN speech today, President Trump said that "all of these [climate] predictions were wrong".

Back in 2019 I led a research effort to digitize old climate model projections and assess how well they did. Turns out they got future warming pretty spot on!
