this will get easier as you play and get more characters of your own. almost every class of enemy unit can be acquired by the player, so you'll have the chance to look at it in your menus and examine it in detail. also the little battle tutorial guys out in the world will tell you how they work

the default priorities are usually mostly in line with what you want a unit to do, but never perfect. like by default any unit with a healing skill will fire it off as soon as anyone's injured, which is often wasteful, so i usually change that from "someone's missing any hp" to "someone's under 75%"

the weapons that add new abilities can cause this kind of skewed priorities on their own, because they usually put their skill at the absolute top and that's not always what you want

if you've got the hang of the top level strategy (which is basically just rock paper scissors - magic beats armor, fliers beat cavalry, archers beat thieves, etc) but your units are losing their fights anyway, make sure your characters are actually prioritizing winning at rock paper scissors

and this is important - if you specify both a situation in which a thing should happen AND a priority for who it should happen to, do the priority second.

If you want something to happen in multiple situations and also specify a priority for it, you can add multiple entries, one for each situation

support skills (the blue ones) are also technically in order of priorities but that only determines which one will activate if multiple of them could go off in a given moment, since sometimes conditions for multiple will be met simultaneously

so basically the highest option in the list for which the condition is met will always be used. i usually put stuff that's really important but contextual at the top (like shooting evasive targets, if you're programming an archer) and then aoes if there's enough enemies, and then single targets

page two. panel 1: ferdinand’s hand suddenly grips the edge of the table. he coughs, “ah! ahem…” panel 2: a host of ominous eyes seem to peer at ferdinand, now bent over. the diplomats think, “there! finally!” as ferdinand warbles, “pardon me… i just— suddenly i feel quite—“ panel 3: the diplomats and ferdinand are silhouetted at the table. and ferdinand releases a massive belch with one fist to his mouth.

page 3. panel 1: eyes wide with shock, ferdinand gasps and apologizes, “saints forgive me! i did not intend—“ but he is interrupted by edelgard and the other black eagles throwing open the doors. edelgard shouts, “ferdinand! dont drink the wine! its been poisoned!” panel 2: ferdinand sweats as weapons and magic fly past him, presumably taking out his would-be assassinators. he mutters, “oh. right. i see. well… i am afraid that, um, i have already had the wine. could that be… bad? or…” panel 3: linhardt picks his way through the tangle of bodies with an, “eugh. blood. ew.” panel 4: he picks up a small glass between pinched fingers and announces, “found the vial. it’s empty.” from offscreen ferdinand adds, “see… that sounds quite bad.”

page 4. panel 1: edelgard turns to hubert and asks, “hubert. do you recognize it? what are his odds?” hubert looks concerned as he reaches for the vial. a concerned petra and terrified bernie stand behind him. panel 2: a close up of the vial as hubert says, “ah. it seems our prime minister is quite lucky. this is indeed a lethal poison, but it is also exceptionally commonplace.” panel 3: ferdinand sweats and listens. hubert says, “uninspired, even,” as ferdinand parrots, “uninspired…” hubert adds, “that dosage would have killed the average man, but i expect ferdinand will handle it without much more than some indigestion.”ferdinand mumbles, “the average… indigestion…”

page 5. panel 1: hubert listens as dorothea asks from offscreen, “and hubie? what exactly makes our dear ferdie different from the ‘average man?’” panel 2: hubert is now visibly sweaty and avoidant as he answers, “well, the… average man has not slowly built up a resistance to run-of-the-mill poisons…” panel 3: “yes!” ferdinand says. “and neither have i—“ he cuts off. his eyes narrow suspiciously and a tea bag and tea cup manifest in his mind as he think about his tea and coffee breaks with hubert. he says, “wait.” panel 4: a tiny ferdinand leans furiously toward hubert and his raised shoulders, snapping, “hubert von vestra. HAVE YOU BEEN POISONING ME?!” hubert winces and admits, “technically it’s called mithridatism…”
