A photo of Shayla in a burnt orange coloured sea kayak, smiling and in front of mountains. To the left are screenshots from the article, showing the text in English and below, translated into Unangam Tunuu, a critically endangered language from the Aleutian Islands with ~ 150 speakers. The text reads: Shayla Alamax̂ Shaishnikoff wishes she could eat the clams and mussels gathered on the rocks along Unalaska’s shores. Once an everyday food for the Unangax̂ people, Shayla's grandparents were the last in her family to gather shellfish in town. That's because the traditional food is no longer harvested, due to high levels of paralytic shellfish toxin. Shayla is working to find a solution to the increased levels of paralytic shellfish toxin that has made blue mussels, a traditional food, dangerous to consume. Shayla’s work blends traditional knowledge with modern approaches, respecting and integrating knowledge from the community.
