A physical UMD case for the PSP game "Every Extend Extra". The cover features a profile of a person's face with vibrant, rainbow-colored lines flowing from their head against a black background. The game title is in white text, and the ESRB rating "E" for Everyone is visible in the bottom left corner.
For #RandomGameSaturday here is Every Extend Extra for the PSP, looking all stylish and futuristic.
I think UMD is the most "this is what the future looks like" media. Like when people drew what future technology would look like, you see something like a UMD.

Family BASIC 2.1 listing that shows when you RUN the code from the first screenshot, you actually end up losing three bytes due to the variable allocation cost. However, repeated usages of this technique in the listing would continue to save you two bytes each time, without incurring additional variable allocation, so after two more usages of the trick you will begin to save memory.

Ah, you do seem to be correct. You save two bytes in the listing (see screenshot 1), but when you run it you do take a memory hit as it allocates for the undefined variable (see screenshot 2). But 0 gets used a lot in nearly every listing, so its still good savings. Thanks for the correction!

HVC7.dev - How Did They Do That? Smooth Scrolling in Family BASIC
I wrote a thing. A #famicom thing!
Not a very long article, but hopefully informative for anyone who wants to see an early assembly routine in a Family BASIC type-in.
Part 2 (and 3?) coming soonish.

I got this CIB at a flea market in the late 90s. Had no idea what it was. Potentially my best random game purchase ever.

A blue Nintendo DSi handheld gaming console is open and powered on, displaying a racing mini game from WarioWare Snapped on both screens. The top screen shows the score and time, while the bottom screen shows a lower-angle view of the track. There is a small camera between the two screens that is tracking the player's head and hand movements in order to control the game.
For #RandomGameSaturday I present to you WarioWare: Snapped! for the Nintendo DSi.
It uses the DSi's camera to perform head and hand tracking, so you are going through the minigames by moving your hands and tilting your head.
It's a bit janky due to the hardware limits, but *super* creative.

I'll probably write a longer article about this later, since some of the things in this book are just bonkers, like a 16-line Family BASIC program that will dump the Family BASIC ROM contents to tape π€―

A high level map of addresses was provided in the Family BASIC manual, so it would have been obvious that the mysterious block reserved for "system" would be where any registers were at. From there it's just a matter of examining game code and experimentation to reverse engineer them.
15.11.2025 18:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
I think the most reasonable path would have been:
1. Use DIY hardware to dump Famicom ROMs
2. Load ROM data onto a capable PC (PC98, Sharp X1, etc.) and examine it as 6502 assembly code.
3. Use POKE/CALL in Family BASIC to write/run ad-hoc assembly code to test the registers.

Okay, I found the Backup Katsuyou Technique books on a Japanese ebook store. Volume 3 from May 1986 has a whole bunch of info about Family BASIC and the Famicom in general, including mapping out at least some of the registers.

Yeah, this one is notable for having a small assembly routine that updates the PPU scroll register so that the background scrolls as you fly through space. Nifty hi-score name entry, too.
