Glad to see our campaign is getting some traction. It’s been a while coming, but we’re getting there.

Now that the Council’s traffic department has agreed that a controlled crossing on this road is needed, we'll stay on them to deliver.

I am glad that on the night, some opposition leaders kindly accepted my invitation to take a picture with our 'Big Up Derby' sign to show that, at least on this one matter, we are on the same page.

It is my hope that my statement sparked something in us to take a step back from the often combative nature of politics and, even if only briefly, recognise that our city is stronger when we act together in its upliftment.

And let’s not forget our partners. From our academic institutions to our businesses, and from community groups to faith leaders, we must 'Big Up' the institutions that make Derby what it is.

And I wanted to 'Big Up' Derby City. This resilient city has experienced its share of ups and downs but has kept on going. It is a city of industry, creativity, community, and pride. It is a city that deserves our support and commitment. Whenever we have the chance, we must 'big it up'.

These individuals perform an almost thankless job daily, yet sometimes political mischief means we only discuss them when we want to draw attention to things that don't go according to plan.

So I wanted to 'big them up' for a change.

I also spoke about how we are addressing these challenges and my hope of returning to update the full council on our progress in the future.

The main focus of my statement, however, was not to talk about my portfolio but to highlight the incredible people who do the work that keeps our city moving.
