During the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), following Zheng He's first voyage, a giraffe was gifted to Emperor Zhu Di. Mistaken for the mythical Qilin, a symbol of peace and prosperity, its arrival sparked great excitement. Paintings of this Somali reticulated giraffe immortalized the event.
