The physical and mental impact of being routinely, consistently, and violently swept away are profound.
Thatβs why weβre taking the City to court to challenge the unconstitutional ban on daytime sheltering.
It means that every day, thousands of people have no accessible, safe shelter.
With nowhere to stay and nowhere to go, at 8am every day, people are forced to pack up and carry their homes and belongings and keep moving. If they donβt they are forcibly displaced.
Homelessness is at an all-time high. The real numbers far exceed the 2025 count of 5,232 for the GVA, with just over half β 2,715 β within Metro Vancouver. Yet there are approximately only 1,400 shelter beds in the city, which often have restrictions making them inaccessible.

If we win this case, unhoused residents will stay connected with services, have others around them to stay safe, and have better access to what they need to survive. When faced with the reality that they cannot clear encampments, cities will be forced to direct resources towards long-term solutions.
