I remain gobsmacked at how stupid Canadaβs immigration conversation has become.
Northern Ontario municipalities are older and dying faster than the rest of the country. According to workforce planning boards, we need 10-20 times more immigrants than naturally occur, just to sustain our economies.
I was just scrolling through Instagram to look at all of the dogs and book people I follow and accidentally watched ICE execute another person. We canβt keep living this way.

13.01.2026 23:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0CBC is doing an excellent series on Northern Ontario's jails. You need only climb the front stairs of Thunder Bay's District Jail to know how little the state cares for the people inside.Windows are boarded, paint is peeling, plants outside are dead. What I've seen and heard of the inside is worse.

28.08.2025 21:05 β π 0 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0At the same time, the people who come to Thunder Bay and deal drugs aren't always powerful themselves. I remember heartbreaking testimony from aToronto mom at her son's TBay bail hearing. She'd worked so hard to keep him out of gangs, she'd driven him to soccer, helped him with school... Also this:

28.08.2025 14:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The authors call the phenomenon street colonization, and invite us to explore the other ways that more powerful groups move in from bigger cities and take over local spaces. I can't help but see parallels with other spheres, beyond the drug trade.

Great recs from @mattseybold.bsky.social on resisting technofeudal education: prioritize print, practice ungrading, "Luddify" the classroom; de-mobilize computer infrastructure (root technology in social place!); faculty governance over SaaS subscriptions; instructor choice re: ed-tech

08.06.2025 15:51 β π 80 π 33 π¬ 5 π 2Newspaper clipping: MOBILE UNIT IN TERRACE BAY FRIDAY The Department of Manpower and Immigration Mobile Unit is making its last swing through the area, Tim Dodd, officer in charge of Thunder Bay's Immigration Centre said today. The mobile unit staffed by an immigration officer is travelling throught eh area to assist those people who are eligible to register under the immigration adjustment of status program. Anyone who is eligible to reghistere is urged to do so now, before the 15th of October. The fact that we have conditionally approved for landed status all who have been interviewed under the program is indicative of the relaxed regulations that are applied to people who are eligible for registration. Many of the early registrants, he said, were university or college students and able to interpret the new regulations for themselves. Our problem now, he said, is to get (continued on page 19....)
MOBILE UNIT - continued from page 16 the message to the rest of the people who are in Canada without proper status, and to convince them to register. They have Manpower Minister Robert Andras' assurance that no one who is eligible for registration that who registers by the 15th of October will be penalized for the manner in which they came to Canada. The mobile unit will be in Terrace Bay on Friday, October 5th.
I came across a clipping from the Terrace Bay (Ontario) News, Oct 3, 1973, inviting people without status to meet the immigration officer and do their paperwork for landing under the Adjustment of Status program.
