Conflicting purposes: Guardianship law, mental health law and involuntary detentions
Part 3 of British Columbia's Adult Guardianship Act provides a statutory framework for protecting adults who are abused or neglected and unable to seeโฆ
My most recent article was just published. It examines involuntary detentions under BC's Adult Guardianship Act. The topic is very relevant given the recent report on involuntary detentions by BC's Human Rights Commissioner.

Pillars For Protecting Our "Core Infrastructure" From OpenAI
Great recs from @mattseybold.bsky.social on resisting technofeudal education: prioritize print, practice ungrading, "Luddify" the classroom; de-mobilize computer infrastructure (root technology in social place!); faculty governance over SaaS subscriptions; instructor choice re: ed-tech

MOBILE UNIT IN TERRACE BAY FRIDAY
The Department of Manpower and Immigration Mobile Unit is making its last swing through the area, Tim Dodd, officer in charge of Thunder Bay's Immigration Centre said today.
The mobile unit staffed by an immigration officer is travelling throught eh area to assist those people who are eligible to register under the immigration adjustment of status program. Anyone who is eligible to reghistere is urged to do so now, before the 15th of October. The fact that we have conditionally approved for landed status all who have been interviewed under the program is indicative of the relaxed regulations that are applied to people who are eligible for registration. Many of the early registrants, he said, were university or college students and able to interpret the new regulations for themselves. Our problem now, he said, is to get (continued on page 19....)
MOBILE UNIT - continued from page 16
the message to the rest of the people who are in Canada without proper status, and to convince them to register. They have Manpower Minister Robert Andras' assurance that no one who is eligible for registration that who registers by the 15th of October will be penalized for the manner in which they came to Canada. The mobile unit will be in Terrace Bay on Friday, October 5th.
I came across a clipping from the Terrace Bay (Ontario) News, Oct 3, 1973, inviting people without status to meet the immigration officer and do their paperwork for landing under the Adjustment of Status program.
No portal, no webform, no PDF forms that won't open. Just a human coming to town.

Beyond the clear racist dog-whistling of these statements, what worries me is how Canadian & Australian PMs (both ostensibly left leaders) might follow KS's lead. We always compare & copy elements of each other's immigration policies...

I have to stop watching Kanyinda because I have to go give a presentation on how health care coverage depends on the complexity of immigration status. Very much hoping to see immigration status recognized as an analogous ground.

The AG Canada started out by making the troubling arguments that (1) it's ok to exclude some women from from a childcare benefit designed to help other women, and (2) immigration status is not deeply personal, it's only transitory, and therefore not an analogous ground.

Ms. Kanyinda's second lawyer - M. Grenier. So much admiration for these advocates (and the interpreters who make it possible for me to follow).
Immigration status is an analogous ground, even if it is temporary, if you take a broad approach to the interpretation of immutability.

Ms. Kanyinda's lawyer citing a study: the lack of childcare services makes it more challenging for mothers to leave the home, work, learn French, run errands, integrate into society. Especially for single mothers.
