The Greater Coucal is an opportunistic hunter, and will eat just about anything it finds including the toxic fruit of the Yellow Oleander. In British India, newcomers, thinking it was a kind of pheasant and might be good to eat, described its meat as being “evil flavoured.”

The Violet Cuckoo lives in the lowland tropical forests and mangroves of Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Like other cuckoos, they are nest parasites. While host species recognize adult cuckoos as a threat, if a chick hatches in their nest they will raise it as one of their own

A little ode to last month! I associate October with many round things: pumpkins, acorns, apples, but also my cats, who become extremely round and fluffy as their fur thickens. Here’s my little ode to the roundest month of the year 🟠

A six-panel comic. In panel 1, text says "People often wonder, why don't I see baby pigeons? Here's where they're hiding:" and there's an egg with an arrow pointing to a question mark, then an arrow pointing to an adult pigeon. Panel 2 says "Pigeons don't nest in trees. They nest in sheltered spaces on or in buildings. This keeps their babies safe from weather and predators." There's a pigeon nesting in a sheltered cavity in the side of a building. Panel 3 says "The hidden babies look like this: like moldy potatoes, but cute" and there are two baby pigeons looking, well, like moldy pink and gray potatoes with yellow fuzz. Panel 4 says "Older baby pigeons hide in plain sight. When they leave the nest, they're adult-sized, but they're still young and learning" and a fledgling pigeon is flying out of a building saying "aaaaaa". Panel 5 says "Here's how to identify these young pigeons" and shows a fledgling pigeon with arrows pointing to these features: eyes may be gray-brown, pale-edged feathers, smaller "nose" (cere), subdued hues, and looks worried. Panel 6 says "Scientifically speaking, though, all pigeons are sweet babies" and there are three very cute round pigeons, a gray, white, and red one, with arrows pointing to them to make things look scientific.

The Red Phalarope feeds on crustaceans which they pull to the surface by swimming in tight circles to create a whirlpool. They are long-distance migrators, breeding along the Arctic circle and traveling thousands of miles to their winter grounds on the shores of tropical oceans.

The Black-breasted Buzzard is most well known for their skills in cracking the eggs of large ground nesting birds such as Emus, Brolgas, and the Australian Bustard. Stones are dropped, thrown, or simply bashed against the egg’s thick shell, allowing access to the contents within.

A Common Potoo perched on a branch over a yellow-orange/grey gradient

The Common Potoo can be found in the open woodlands and savannah of every South American Country except Chile, as well as Trinidad & Tobago. The disruptive coloration of their feathers makes them almost impossible to find when mimicking the branches or stumps on which they rest.

The ‘Akiapola’āu is endemic to the old-growth mesic and wet forests of the big island of Hawai’i. They hunt for insects like a woodpecker, pecking holes in the bark of trees and using their long thin bill to probe out their prey.

The ʻAlae ʻula, which once lived across most of Hawai'i, is now found only on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. They live in lowland marshes, using the large feet to walk across floating vegetation in search of food. Current estimates put their population at less than 1,000 birds.

The ʻAnianiau is the smallest of the Hawaiian honeycreepers, growing to only 10cm (~4in) long and weighing just 10g. They are endemic to the highland forests of Kauai. After they were first described in the 1830's, they were not seen again for another 50 years.
