i would not recommend trying to shoot a 70 year old slightly broken camera at a street festival. people want to ask you questions or give you space to take a photo and you are just trying to get the camera to fire.

20+ years ago when I lived in Portland, that part of downtown was usually empty.

Portland is a west coast city, it never had the crush of foot traffic of a Boston or NYC.
