Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Anemones are some of my favorite animals. Partially because they don’t look like animals. Like coral, anemones have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthesizing algae. Corals are symbiotic with zooxanthellae and anemones with zoochlorellae!

More anemones under black light! They have fluorescent proteins in their tentacles! You can also see some algae around them that are also emitting a beautiful red color!

they “sweep” food out of the water! they actually also have the largest reproductive organ of any animal (when considering ratio to body size) LOL

good to know! i’m going to pillar point and the tide is gonna be around -0.2 and i wasn’t sure if i was going to be able to see much.

great finds! do u still find stuff at higher tides tides? (-0.2 to 0ft ish)?

This is one of the smallest nudibranchs I’ve ever seen! I like to go when the tide isn’t super low, sometimes it’s nice to focus on a small space, you notice a lot. This is a baby shaggy mouse!
