No-go military zones now covering 70% of Gaza and the displacement of around 90% of the population to overcrowded living spaces with little access to clean water and sanitation, infectious diseases are rife.

The Israeli Govt has also targeted civilian infrastructure required for survival.

89% of the water and sanitation systems, and
92% of housing destroyed or damaged.

Starvation is only one aspect of this grim reality. Nearly half a million people are at risk of starvation, a predicament precipitated by the Israeli Govt's refusal to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip for over 11 weeks, despite destruction of most agricultural, fishery, & food systems.

Victoria Day is a time to reflect on displacement, language suppression, and systemic inequalities - Pancouver Victoria ruled an empire that has receded, but the consequences of its policies remain painfully present in many parts of the world.

My friend @navdeepsingh.bsky.social sums up how many racialized Canadians feel about Victoria Day. He does it with eloquence and insight. Read it in @pancouver.bsky.social. pancouver.ca/victoria-day...

Opinion | Musk Said No One Has Died Since Aid Was Cut. That Isn’t True. A journey through the front lines of global poverty shows that when the world’s richest men slash aid for the world’s poorest children, the result is sickness, starvation and death.

You may be thinking: This is very sad, but why is it the US job to keep kids alive in poor countries?

Most Americans welcome reforms& are proud to save the lives of hungry children/sick orphans worldwide by allocating just 24c of every $100 of national income to aid

The Case of the Gurdwara, the Lumber Barons and the KKK | The Tyee In Abbotsford, the first Sikh place of worship holds a complicated history.

In 1908, about 50 Sikh mill workers decided to build a gurdwara in Abbotsford.

The owners, the Trethewey family with links to KKK, donated whatever lumber they could carry on their backs.

So the Sikh men lugged the lumber from Mill Lake to the property site, an uphill trek of about 2 km.

Urban design is not neutral, it either perpetuates or reduces social inequities within cities. That is very hard for people to wrap their minds around because urbanists are taught that they are good, that they make communities better, and are the bringers of solutions. – @jaypitter.bsky.social
