Elk Haven Winery Mentor & Friend 2022, Red Mountain, Washington State Pretty color of ruby with a wide reddish rim. Strong nose of red fruits with chocolate notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Very dry on the palate with raspberries, cherries, light wood, peppercorn, spices, coffee, dark chocolates, light earth and black tea. Nice finish with grippy tannins and tangy cherries. This is a very interesting red blend from Red Mountain. Powerful and fruit forward. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly, so be patient. Feels young, especially on the palate and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly. Nicely balanced, and good by itself or with food. A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec and 20% Syrah. 13.1% alcohol by volume. 89 points. $59.

Wine prices in New York City (Sherry-Lehmann) back in April 1976. An amazing historical document. A bottle of 1970 Chateau Lafite for $19.95 in 1976 is the equivalent of $115.24 in Dec 2025 (using the CPI Inflation Calculator of the BLS). In addition, there was a case discount.

I liked the way I scored back in 1997. This was my first trip to California with friends, and we did some wine country visits. Quite pleased that I've kept my website content from almost 30 years ago live. There weren't many wine websites then.
