He/Him #Geology geologist somewhere in Utah. Will occasionally post dogs, rocks, and various other nature things, but mostly here to see what else is going on and learn cool new things/keep up with the horrors of authoritarian destruction.

World - M7+ in 2025 USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, responsible for monitoring, reporting, and researching earthquakes and earthquake hazards

Looks like there are 10-20 7.0-7.9 quakes/year. So it’s certainly uncommon but not wildly unlikely to have two big quakes close in time but in very different places. Maybe it’s more common than we’d expected, similar to the birthday paradox. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Weird that the map misses all of the Basin and Range grabens that have thousands of feet of sediment, including plenty of Neogene deposits. But the overall idea is a crucial one for geologists and paleontologists to keep in mind!

Should also say @stressrelated.bsky.social has some great comments in the comment thread about oxidation and reduction in the Navajo SS, RE hydrocarbons. That’s thought to be responsible for the range of color from orange-red to sugar cookie dough color throughout the very widespread formation.

Second everything @zzsylvester.bsky.social posted about soft sed deformation of dune deposits. No sign of structural folding, but spectacular soft sed stuff prior to lithification. The texture in the foreground is really interesting, too! Not exactly backyard, but only a few hours away.

The most frustrating narrative around deep-sea mining is the argument that it is "better" than terrestrial mining.

There is no version of deep-sea mining that offsets terrestrial mining. The commercialization of deep-sea mining may accelerate terrestrial mining. It is an additive impact.

Not very impressed with these Yokohama Geolandars, in terms of durability. Seems like a minor amount of damage to cause a leak (were inflated within 1-2 psi of spec before leak). Should be a quick patch, but when it comes time for new tires I’m almost certainly choosing something else.

Got a tire puncture today and could hear the hissing (stopped to reinflate and head home before putting on the spare). Figured I’d try the old dish soap method to find the leak and it was a lot more obvious than I expected.
