Channel 5 revives BBC’s Play for Today to ‘help shape future of British drama’ Series aims to follow original in tackling ‘thornier issues’, and to support talent from lower-income backgrounds

Wow, I was not expecting this. My dad wrote several Play for Todays in the early 1980s, including one called The Cause in 1981 – about unionism and the Spanish Civil War. I watched it recently & thought – where would this be commissioned now? I look forward to seeing what they do

Top two stories on the Guardian site

“Mourners gather amid outrage over Israeli troops’ killing of journalists in Gaza”

“Anyone showing support for Palestine Action ‘will feel full force of the law’, justice minister says”

Future historians of the genocide; this is where we are 11th Aug 2025.

‘A million calls an hour’: Israel relying on Microsoft cloud for expansive surveillance of Palestinians Revealed: The Israeli military undertook an ambitious project to store a giant trove of Palestinians’ phone calls on Microsoft’s servers in Europe

Because I am angry I will share this again. One of the reasons that Israel is able to target individuals so precisely is that it collects every phone call in Gaza and stores the recordings in Microsoft Azure, then uses AI to analyze and pick targets.

Spotify is a horrible platform in so many ways. People should consider if they're ok using it. We use Tidal in the shop for streaming and are really happy with it. Some of the staff use Qobuz at home. Spotify sounds terrible and their ethics are disgusting.

A Forgotten Surrealist’s Paintings Return to New York Last year, Henry Orlik was living in poverty after being evicted. Now his work is worth millions.

What a story, and so sensitively written by @samknightwrites.bsky.social with all the curiosity you'd hope for in a piece like this – do read, it's a cracker:

Spotify launches global mental health initiative for music community As part of the initiative with Backline, Spotify is launching the first ever Global Mental Health Resource Hub, a comprehensive support platform…

Call me naive, but alongside launching "groundbreaking global initiatives" to "support creators’ mental wellbeing" Spotify could, I dunno, actually pay musicians a decent amount for the music they stream? I would think that might help them thrive.

Hello everyone, I wrote some words for @thequietus.com on the tenth anniversary rerelease of Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell — a piece that’s all about grief and myth-making, the fallibility of memory, and the failings of art-making in the midst of it all. In short: LOTS OF FEELINGS.
