To add one more layer to this. About 10 years ago my formidable former Globe and Mail colleague Renata D'Aliesio took on a mission to document suicide following the Afghanistan mission. In some initial reporting she found 54 Canadian soldiers and veterans had died from suicide. +

I was at a Remembrance Day ceremony last fall with my brother, a former combat medic and Afghan veteran, listening as he recounted details of dead & wounded colleagues of his who'd supposedly 'stayed a little back, off the front line.'

I'm gonna start work now and I'm gonna think a lot about this.

Excellent point. Probably 1/3 of the population would be on our side, too. OTOH, they mostly aren't the ones with the guns.

My great-aunt and father kept us up to date on news from my cousin James when he served in Afghanistan as a bomb expert on the front lines. This article is from when he made it home, describing the loss of two members from his platoon.
