The ECs, the government's deep thinkers

In Kathryn May's latest newsletter, she delves into detail on on particular sector of the public service cuts particularly meaningful to the policy community. Highly recommend.

The mayor suffers a double blow-out from potholes in Montreal streets.

Our streets are a long-running joke but Iโ€™ve never seen them this bad in the middle of winter.

Ummโ€ฆ hard NO to this.

Has this master of strategery learned nothing from Trumpโ€™s behaviour? No amount of appeasement nor pride swallowing will satisfy Trump. It just emboldens the next ask/demand.

Firm resolve. Build whatโ€™s in our control. And stay the course as a sovereign nation. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Up to 89 percent of ambulances for overdoses concealed in record year, as Alberta health care careens into crisis The Alberta government says it has โ€œthe most transparent data reporting system in North America" for drug toxicity. In reality, internal data manipulation causes most emergency calls to go unreported.

Alberta Health Services docs obtained via freedom of information request show that up to 85 percent of provincial EMS dispatches for drug toxicity were not reported by the Alberta government, @drugdatadecoded.ca reports:

Why cheap Chinese EVs may cost Canada more in the long run Canadaโ€™s EV tariff deal with China may lower prices, but it raises long-term risks for environmental accountability and strategic autonomy.

Remembering 31 Canadian Afghanistan war veterans lost to suicide At least 70 soldiers and vets died by suicide after serving on the Afghanistan mission โ€“ a growing cohort excluded from official accounts. Dozens of families shared stories of Forces members who serve...

Here's the project we managed to put together thanks to the courage and generosity of the families of 31 soldiers and veterans.

I find it impossible to remember this and not be angry in today's context.

She then enlisted the estimable reporter Al Maki (now retired) and me to help her dig into it more. We found there were at least 70 cases as of 2016, and dozens more since.

We also wanted to create a kind of memorial to this part of the sacrifice people made in the war. +

To add one more layer to this. About 10 years ago my formidable former Globe and Mail colleague Renata D'Aliesio took on a mission to document suicide following the Afghanistan mission. In some initial reporting she found 54 Canadian soldiers and veterans had died from suicide. +

I was at a Remembrance Day ceremony last fall with my brother, a former combat medic and Afghan veteran, listening as he recounted details of dead & wounded colleagues of his who'd supposedly 'stayed a little back, off the front line.'

I'm gonna start work now and I'm gonna think a lot about this.

My great-aunt and father kept us up to date on news from my cousin James when he served in Afghanistan as a bomb expert on the front lines. This article is from when he made it home, describing the loss of two members from his platoon.
