A Bloom Country strip from 1988, satirizing the War on Drugs.

Panel One:
A White woman in a fur coat holding a clipboard approaches a Black man in a scarf behind a stand selling "illegal cat sweat scalp tonic" for $12,000 a bottle
Woman: "Hello, young underclass youth...I'm from the government..."

Panel Two:
Woman: "We'd like to know why you prefer a life of crime making $20,000 a week selling scalp tonic"

Panel Three:
Woman: "When you could be working honestly at McDonald's"

Panel Four:
Man: "Allergic to French Fries."
Woman: "Oh! We have a program for that!"

A Bloom County strip from 1988; satirizing the War on Drugs

Panel One
- Narration: Soon, Dr. Oliver's illegal hair restorer was flooding the consumer countryside...
It shows Opus the Penguin smuggling Slap Tonic past a sign that says "Just say NO to Hair"

Panel Two
- Narration: Washington acted: The formation of the "Scalp-Tonic Interdiction Agency" was announced...
Dan Quayle, VP to Bush Sr, behind a podium, screaming "WATCH OUT TONIC RUNNERS, WE MEAN BUSINESS!! WE'RE WINNING THE WAR! GEORGE BUSH WILL BE IN CHARGE OF THIS OPERATION! DANGER CITY!!"

Panel Three
- Narration: After 3 months and $750 million, 0.017% of all the smuggled tonic was triumphantly interdicted.
Two "agents" are depicted (hicks with guns). One has mirror shades and a cigarette and is holding a desert eagle, his foot placed on a box of Scalp Tonic. He is labelled "Alberquerque Vice". The other agent has a giant stupid grin on his face and points at the box.

Panel Four
- Narration: ...the results were dramatic.
Milo Bloom, surrounded by boxes of Scalp Tonic with destination labels for Hawaii, New York, Washington and elsewhere. "0.017% PRICE INCREASE!" Milo yells.

Hey, hey! I've made my @rpgsite.net (and game critic) debut with a deeeeeep dive look at a game I've been anticipating for years: @somethingclassic.bsky.social's Quartet.

How does it compare to recent retro revival RPGs like Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, and Eiyuden Chronicle? Let's find out.

Laughing at Donald Trump saying he'd definitely feel comfortable living in Zohran Mamdani's New York on the same day that half the consultant brain-poisoned Democratic party voted to condemn socialism

Vancouver’s Last Sex Worker Drop-In Centre May Shutter in Spring | The Tyee The city is changing how it funds Kingsway Community Station. That’s ‘dangerous,’ its program director says.

Vancouver's last all-night drop in centre for street-based sex workers is facing an uncertain future as the city considers changing how its funded.
If the KCS closed there would be no other drop in centres for sex workers, anywhere in the city. That's dangerous.

In an interview this week, Ken Sim said that he had a list of all the times he said no to the Vancouver Police Department, and said a lot of their budget increases were out of the city's control.

We got the list. We looked at the budget.

Here is a fact check.

The balance of socialism must be the fulsome defence of democracy and a strong constitution. That is how you prevent oligarchies, which arise when an elite group exploits the socialist framework to seize the means of production BACK into a capitalist framework, as has happened in China and Russia.

Socialism is the ideal democratic economic system; the collective ownership of the means of production.
State ownership, co-operatives, unions, etc., empower collective use of resources.
Dictatorships arise in capitalist systems, like Russia - an oligarchy or kleptocracy, as is happening in the US.

How it went:

Player: "I'm you from the future! Our new exhibit will destroy the world!"

*rolls nat 1 on persuasion*

Curator: "Ok, what's my mother's name?"

Player: "I...don't know."

In tonight's D&D session: one of my players uses Disguise Self to take on the appearance of a museum curator, corners that curator on the street, and attempts to persuade them that they're their future self, so they will hand over a new exhibit that is actually the egg of an otherworldly monster.

The point is well-taken though that producers, being greedy dingbats, refuse to take any financial risks and therefore allow any creative freedom - the only people who get to do so have BIG resumes and can get deals on their names, or have the resources to start production companies.

It's an interesting phenomenon. A lot of things coming together at once:
- the genre becoming more widely known and accepted in mainstream culture
- technology allowing the realization of realistic imagery without breaking the bank
- successive generations steeped in the genre from birth

I can count on fewer than five fingers the times I've had issues to the point of violence with unhoused people.

I've given up counting the number of times I've been threatened or attacked by drunk 20-30-something young male finance bro types, and the endless times I've been menaced by drivers.

Physically, more or less. The punch drew blood from their lip connecting with their teeth.

Mentally, I mean, not great. Knowing there's a creep out there who knows where they work and already demonstrated violence is pretty bad.

At least once a week (far more often multiple times) I am threatened by incompetent or angry drivers. This is a plague.

Car culture in Canada is out of control and is being enabled by right-wing politicians like Doug Ford. You wanna kill somebody here? Use a car.

Coincidentally, while this happened, I was taking Bailey out and was nearly run over. TWICE. By drivers who flipped ME off, despite me being in crosswalks, one at an intersection where I had a walk sign. In the latter, the driver then pulled into a parking lot across two spaces, and glared at me.

Two other employees at the Bike Valet witnessed this assault. The person also entered the storage space, committing an act of trespass.

The person who assaulted my friend is an older (55+) white man driving a burgundy vehicle.

The time was very precise; my friend began their shift at 12pm.

At about noon my friend who works the Bike Valet was assaulted.

They were cycling to work WB in the Pandora bikelane and got cut off by a driver turning into McDonald's. Words exchanged; my pal left. The driver followed on foot to the Bike Valet, punched them in the face and fled.
