On this day in 1844 the foundation stone was laid for Penshaw Monument in Tyne and Wear.
Officially, it is called the Earl of Durham's Monument and is a replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens. It's such a beloved landmark that appears on the badge of Sunderland Football Club.

I've been working with local historians and David Gordon Scott (OU) to raise awareness of this little-known massacre. Today we gathered to mark the bicentenary with speeches and the naming of the dead. (1/2)

Blog update: The Toy Dolls "Nellie The Elephant" was the NME Indie Chart's 1984 Christmas number one, and sat just behind Band Aid, Wham! and Paul McCartney in the national charts. How did a punk band from Sunderland achieve this, and was this the last ever first/second wave punk hit?
