I’ve taken up cricket again this summer after many decades away. While the sweetness of hitting a shot just right is just so sweet (so good you can’t even feel it) the feeling of desolation on being bowled, or the umpires finger going up, is entire. A hard, addictive, beautiful game isn’t it.

Philip Miller’s third case for reporter Sandison effortlessly braids together three interconnected story lines. The strands of his sophisticated narrative come together slowly, and he enriches the proceedings with striking prose and lovable characters.
