The article explains a law has been proposed in Florida to allow children as young as 14 to work overnight shifts in agriculture & constraction to make up for lost migrant labour. Yes really.

Where are good accounts/publications to get info about bird flu? Now that I can expect the US government to keep as much under wraps as possible. πŸ™ƒ

Trump announces an executive order authorizing a 30,000 capacity migrant detention center in Guantanamo.

"Some of them are so bad we don't even trust the countries to hold them because we don't want them coming back, so we're going to send them out to Guatanamo Bay."

Audrey is a white woman with dark brown-black hair wearing clear-rimmed classes. She is softly smiling with pressed lips. She has her hair pulled up in a clip and is wearing an oversized sweatshirt that says β€œto write love on her arms” and holding up a DSA coffee mug that reads β€œthe best coffee is union-made” with DSA’s rose mascot.

I can still enjoy at-home coffee for now and love on my people. Fiction books (intentionally avoiding most dystopian stuff for obvious reasons) have also been helpful.

I don’t know what to do besides get involved in local community/mutual aid structures, or how I feel besides overwhelmed. My daily prayer is to hold on to hope with as much spite as possible.

What’s keeping you going? What do you need? What can we help each other with?

You are wonderful & loved!

A graphic with a light red background featuring a darker red silhouette of a person holding a megaphone in the bottom right corner. on the left side. Dark red butterflies are emerging from the megaphone and are scattered across the graphic

On the left is an excerpt from the poem β€œThe Butterfly Effect” written in white text:

…This
is how we rise.
This day is polluted
with a mistrust of truth,
fertile and warm medium
for unchecked cruelty and
power. You must choose
to scream the truth
until every leaf and stone
bears unrepentant witness.
to what happens when
you try to cage and smash,
to pin and frame a butterfly
and their thousands and thousands
of fabulous, flamboyant friends.

At the bottom, smaller white font is the attribution: Excerpted from β€œThe Butterfly Effect” in Spilling the Light, by UU Rev. JuliΓ‘n Jamaica Soto.

In the top-right corner, the "UU World" logo is displayed in white within a blue rectangle, accompanied by the website URL: UUWORLD.ORG.

Rev. JuliΓ‘n Jamaica Soto’s β€œThe Butterfly Effect” reminds us that small actions shape the worldβ€”a truth reflected in Dr. King’s legacy. On MLK Day, we honor his bold dream of justice, equality, and love, carried forward by collective action. Read the full poem at bit.ly/4jlWJrM. #MLK #UU

Martin Luther King wasn’t asking people to do community service. He was asking folks to liberate oppressed peoples.

You could look up your local unhoused and underserved community resource group, Planned Parenthood, &c, & ask them what kind of help they need. Or search for other volunteer opportunities near you. Or even just talk or plan w/ friends about what you want to work at making different.

Anything helps.

A wonderful teacher to look at for how to respond to a growing empire and tyranny is none other than Jesus of Nazareth. How do I interpret his teachings? We must continue, and we must continue in love.

It is both inspiring and terrifying: Clearly there is an β€œafter” because this cycle of tyranny and emancipation has happened many times before. That also means it has happens. Many times. Before.

On Organizing time to level up / an early draft of a playbook

Over 50% of nonviolent movements to overthrow governments are successful within one year of their peak.

The key is to engage over 3.5% of the country, a cross-section of societyβ€”clergy, kids, grandmas, teachers) using DIVERSE & CREATIVE tactics, with women in leadership.

We can do this.

Jo VonRue's Prayer for Moving Forward speaks to UU values of resilience, hope, and justice. It reminds us to draw strength from community, hold fast to equity and peace, and trust in shared humanity.

How can we inspire and support each other in this work?
