If star trek enterprise had a normal star trek theme song, im convinced it would have made it to 7 seasons like others. The tonal whiplash from these opening scenes to the theme song just makes me laugh. If i was watching this and didnt have a skip intro button, i too would have stopped tuning in

Yeah, i think it suffered from me having already read Rama. Not many can beat Clarke when he’s exploring sci fi concepts. I think Teela kind of derails a lot of what i was enjoying in Ringworld once she’s introduced

I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 as I think its worth reading for the Ringworld concept which is now an ever present idea in sci fi through current times

Another hugo award winners, Rendezvous with Rama, comes out a couple of years later and for me, it does the “exploration of an alien constructed world” bit much more interestingly than Ringworld does (Though it also has flat characters).

The ringworld and its exploration doesnt begin until a good third or so of the book and while there is a lot of interesting concepts and science around the unique at the time Ringworld, it doesnt really reach the excitement of the opening for me.

But where Babel-17 really pulls you into its unique characters, Ringworld presents very flat characters who feel like they should be more interesting than they are in the book. The female characters in particular are little more than sexual objects for the male characters.

I enjoyed the book, but it has some severe flaws for people who read it in current times. It starts off throwing you right into the world introducing humans with longer lifespans, teleportation, and unique aliens. Its strong opening reminded me of a previous Hugo winner: Babel-17.

Ringworld released to great acclaim thanks to the beautifully imaginative world created by Larry Niven. I wasnt alive at the time, but, Ringworld seems to be a major part of the new wave of sci fi that was kicked off by Dangerous Visions.
