I really enjoyed the opportunity to hear Mark Estelle, Maarten Koornneef & @plantevolution.bsky.social speak about their careers at the recent @naascarabidopsis.bsky.social #PlantScience Awards.

As always on such occasions, I found myself looking up the old papers mentioned. I compiled them here πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡

Depictions of evolution where a phylogeny often has humans on the far right or top can give an impression of evolution being progressive of leading to β€˜increased complexity’ when it does not. Top figure shows such a phylogeny which can look the same as β€˜the March of progress’ depiction most commonly used to depict evolution (showing monkey to man erroneous march of evolution) - instead swiveling some nodes on a phylogeny where humans are shown closer to the center (which doesn’t change relationships) can lead to better β€˜tree thinking’

New post by me on #MITPressReader @mitpress.bsky.social

On the 100th anniversary of the #ScopesMonkeyTrial
the ways we depict #evolution can still give an erroneous progressive view (that evolution leads to humans or β€˜increased complexity’).

It’s fellowship season in UK and many postdocs will be looking for host institutions. This is a very critical step. Approach at least 3-4 hosts. Make sure there is genuine interest in hiring you. Many institutions claim to support fellows into long term careers but most actually don’t. #UKRIFLF

Imagine, if you will, that NASA updated its website to suggest gravity might not exist, prompting CalTech and CERN to release statements saying, "With great sadness, we can no longer recommend listening to NASA."

This is what's happening in epidemiology.

The photo shows a wooden fencepost covered by several different species of lichen all growing in a mosaic formation. The different coloured dots are the lichen's fruit. The one with black dots is Lecidella elaeochroma, the one with creamy/brown dots is Lecanora hybocarpa. In between is a green one with no dots called Lecanora compallens. At the top is a ridged green lichen called Diplocia canescens and off to the right and near the bottom are shrubby young Ramalina lichen.
