it feels disingenuous to say β€œwe have enormous wealth”. on average we might but it’s the distribution that counts and on that front most people don’t have enormous wealth. The wealth isn’t invisible it’s concentrated & hoarded

Those areas are wildly different sizes. A & B are tiny compared with G & D

Looking forward to this! I recommended Warcry in my survey response but I also think Martin Wallace’s Wildlands (and the judge dredd spinoff) is a really interesting addition to the genre which might be worth a look

There’s something about Wes Streeting’s waxen visage that reminds me of the kid in that old Frys chocolate advert

I re-read it a couple of years back after realising the same thing. It was alright but I wouldn’t bother tbh, some interest as a time capsule but otherwise slight. that said, it was a very easy read so if you have a copy lying around…

I went New Order but honestly could have voted differently on a different day. I've never taken NIN seriously but it's never affected my enjoyment.

Always love to see bookcases, if there are any in the background of photos I gurantee I will zoom in on them to have a nose around (have even been known to screencap zoom meetigns to do the same) so in the spirit of providing others with the same pleasure here's the one that sits next to my desk...

The actual odd thing isnt people reading in public but columnists assuming everything happening public is a performance for their benefit, like they can’t imagine a world which they’re not the center of

High on Fire on stage: Right a sweaty topless man playing guitar infront of an Orange (brand and colour) amplifier. Left a man ith a big beard and a bass guitar, in the background a drumer (star of the show IMO)

Was able to perform an impromtu experiment last night re earplug efficacy when I lost one of mine and had to make do with a cheap foam one from Boots in my left ear. Conclusion: it's definately worth having decent ear plugs.

Over the first 2 episodes it felt like they just didn’t have as many former band members as the boy bands one did (not a single spice girl), the atomic kitten section felt relatively strong because they have more than one.

Great clip of Ted Chippington on Pebble Mill in 1986. YT comment otm - "It's quite a talent to be able to make an entire audience laugh and for not one of them to realise that you're funny."

I’ve been playing it but it hasn’t bitten me as hard as balatro did last year. it feels a bit more respectful of my time insofar as there’s a bit more friction stopping me from jumping back into the next run

In the last phrase of this eloquent sentence, Saramago doesn't say fellow-men, but fellow-creatures. To him "man" is not the sole subject of human interest, in whom all value and meaning inheres, but a member of a large household. Saramago's reminder to us that we aren't the be-all and end-all of creation is, usually, a dog. I developed a simple ranking system for his fiction: the books with a dog are better than the ones with no dog; the more important the dog, the better the book.

re Jose Saramago and dogs: This is from Ursula Le Guin's review of his last novel (I've read enough of his books now to be able to confirm that this simple ranking system is correct esp if as Le Guin suggests you count elephants as dogs)
