Letter from Kirk McPike to Alyia Gaskins:

Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation from the Alexandria City Council effective at noon on Monday, February 9, 2026.

It has been an incredible honor to work with you and our colleagues on behalf of the residents of Alexandria. I am very proud of the work we have done together to increase the supply of housing, to address climate change, to support our schools, to approve a landmark series of collective bargaining agreements, and to address the other issues facing our City.

I am grateful for the incredible efforts of our City's staff to support me during my time in office, and to the people of Alexandria for giving me this chance to serve.

I look forward to working with you in the future.

Boosting because I'm told a couple neighbors have submitted requests for snow removal help in ARL and FFX.

Surrounding jurisdictions β€œdon’t really have a program like this,” a coordinator told me. If volunteers in those areas sign up, the Snow Buddy Program says it will help connect them.

Analysis | Why the winter storm in D.C. on Sunday was so exceptional The storm was a notable one β€” not simply because of how much precipitation fell but also because of what fell and how cold it was when it fell.

Thanks to @capitalweather for this breakdown of the conditions we're seeing across the region. https://wapo.st/464M67y

Sending gratitude for all the public servants and contractors working around the clock to clear our streets and keep Alexandria safe!

For the first time in years, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all service for Monday, January 26 due to extreme icy conditions.

With safety as our top priority, we determined that operating service would put our riders, staff, and community at unnecessary risk.
