Lea Ypi: How to think about surveillance A picture of her grandmother posted on social media sent the author to the archives of Albania’s former security services — and raised difficult questions about who watches us today

“Bizarrely, what once stood out as one of the most dehumanising aspects of the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, namely their tendency to spy on their citizens, … is fully normalised, even celebrated, in societies that have made data-gathering a core aspect … of how their economies work.”

These chatbots should be pulled off the market, at least until the companies can prove they’re safe. We used to regulate the ads kids would see; now companies can push products that manipulate and exploit them and it’s all fair game.

@nitasha.bsky.social is doing fantastic work on this topic!

DeSantis seeks to blame Legislature for street-art crackdown. Lawmakers tell different story. As Florida’s campaign against colorful crosswalks has gone beyond LGBTQ+ rainbow crosswalks to encompass a wide range of roadway art, Gov. Ron DeSantis has been getting pushback — and seeking to sh…

9. DeSantis this weekend attempted to deflect responsibility, blaming the legislature: “There’s laws that are on the books that I enforce that I may not fully agree with, but I took an oath to do it and so that’s the way the cookie crumbles, and so but there was a change in law."

Opinion from our Editorial Board: Delray officials are fighting a state order to remove its rainbow intersection by demanding a hearing before the Florida Department of Transportation. No one has any doubt the city will lose. The state is judge, jury and executioner and there is no due process.

Actually, Slavery Was Very Bad The president’s latest criticism of museums is a thinly veiled attempt to erase Black history.

I debated writing this. It can feel tempting, upon encountering yet another instance of this administration’s racism, to let it be. How many ways can you say the same thing over and over again? And yet we have to write it down, if for nothing else, so those who come after us know we were against it.

Here's how millions of people could lose health insurance if Trump's tax bill becomes law Roughly 11.8 million adults and kids will be at risk for losing health insurance if Republicans’ domestic policy package becomes a law.

Aight so what is this going to mean for Floridians who depends so heavily on ALFs for eldercare?

Really straightforward but worth repeating. Good journalism illuminates reality. Bad journalism obscures reality. False equivalency obscures reality, so naturally it’s bad journalism.

Condo/HOA fee costs are skyrocketing after being kept artificially low, a lot of Florida owners are trying to dump them because their retirements can't keep pace. Basically the party has been over in South Florida real estate for a year or two.

I know I'm not the first person or even the millionth person to point this out; it's not even the first time *I* have said it, but this is what actual First Amendment violations look like and the fact that none of the supposed free speech warriors are saying anything about it tells us everything.

Labour are wrongly appropriating the term antisemitism to cover up for past wrongs, while perpetuating the genuinely antisemitic trope that all Jews are linked to the IDF.

The trope being - all Jews are Zionists in league with Israel.
